How often do you get to play golf these days?

At least once per week.

What inspired you to take up the sport?

I grew up across the road from County Armagh Golf Club in Northern Ireland. One of my friends started and I thought I would have a go. A neighbour gave me some hickory shafted clubs which I carried around in a bag I found on a dump. It was 1977. I was ten and skint!

Where is your home club and why do you enjoy playing there?

I am a member at Brocket Hall Golf Club in Herts. I love it there. There two great courses that offer very different challenges. Also the patio at the golf club is a great place to relax after a round in the summer. And it’s all a five minute drive from home!

What is the best golf course you have ever played?

Finca Cortesin is definitely the best course I played in 2011. Up until then my favourite inland course was Les Bordes. My favourite links courses would be The European, Ballybunion and Royal County Down.

What is your favourite moment from golf’s rich history?

Mickleson’s six iron from the pine needles on the 13th in the 2010 Masters – awesome!

Phil Mickelson’s thrilling shot during the final round of the 2010 Masters.

Who would complete your dream fourball?

I’d love to play with the Northern Irish boys Darren Clarke, GMac and Rory but I know it’d be awful because my golf would turn to mush!

If you had the keys to a private jet and could choose to play any golf course in the world; where would you go?

Augusta or Pebble Beach – couldn’t choose between them!

Pebble Beach

Pebble Beach – Top of many a golfers list of dream golf courses.

If you worked for Your Golf Travel, where would you recommend for people to go for a golf holiday?

Depends what they are looking for!

What is the best golf related advice you have ever received?

Enjoy yourself even when you aren’t playing well!

What piece of golfing equipment or golfing gadget could you not live without?

I think everyone should have a five wood in their bag – very versatile!

What’s the funniest thing you have witnessed on a golf course?

Last year I was playing at Formby Hall. It was hot so I was putting some talcon powder down my trousers to protect against GA. I overdid the application and for the next ten minutes every step I took produced a puff of talc from the bottom of my trouser legs. Tres amusement!
