Lisbon Golf Tour Review

By June 3, 2011No Comments

The Thucket Knowe Golf Society has been going to the Lisbon area for 13 years, basing our group in different hotels in Cascais or Sesimbra. We started to go to Portugal after many years in Scotland, great courses but too much rain!

This year we based our golf break in the Sesimbra Hotel and Spa. The rooms were excellent, the views spectacular, while the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The nearby local restaurants were excellent, with plenty of ambience.

After so many years, and having seen quite a lot of changes, we are now of the opinion that Cascais is a beautiful town to visit, but it seems to have become a little “chic”, with prices to match. Sesimbra however, in spite of a lot of investment to make it more of a resort, still retains its fishing port atmosphere, with the restaurants staying the same, offering the same good food.

This year we played Aroeira 1 and 2, Penha Longa and Quinta do Peru. We have played all of them numerous times before, and this time we would say that:-

Aroeira Golf Resort

Aroeira 1 was in the best condition we have seen it, there are some very good holes but there are a few that are quite similar, there are certainly plenty of pine trees to negotiate!

Aroeira 2 was also in great condition and is a much more interesting course, with many different holes, but it is long for the mid/high handicapper, you need to be long. The staff at Aroeira were very welcoming and helpful, we will be there again.

Next it was on to Penha Longa for the umpteenth time. The course was, as always in excellent condition, the holes so varied and interesting and if the golf isn’t going well the views are magnificent! The course is one of the best, but if you use buggies you are restricted to the concrete path alongside every hole, which can mean a long walk to your ball.

The course is one of our favourites, but the impression is that Penha Longa, with its smart hotel is more of a business than a golf club although the course is so good we will be back.

Penha Longa

The 4th course we played was Quinta do Peru, which is always one of our favourites. The holes are varied and the course was in immaculate condition. The staff were great, the food and drink was good value, and we would like to keep the place a secret, because for the club golfer, this is Utopia.

What else can we say? The Lisbon area is superb for golf.
