Lincolnshire might not jump off the page as a destination for a golf holiday but upon closer inspection, this picturesque county in the East Midlands boasts a handful of golfing gems of considerable sparkle. In 1996 Forest Pines joined the golfing party in the Fenland County and its 27 holes, as well as a fantastic 188 room hotel by Q Hotels, form the basis of an excellent destination for an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Designed by John Morgan, a former PGA Tour player, Forest Pines is undoubtedly one of the best golf courses to have been opened for play in England in more recent years. In fact, Golf World once judged the course to be the best to have opened since 1994.

With a hint of Woburn and a pinch of Wentworth – two golfing names of international repute – Forest Pines boasts the recipe to offer a thoroughly intoxicating test of golf and – at £99 for a 1 night 2 round package – it comes at a fraction of the cost of its storied neighbours to the South.

Forest Pines, with its picturesque surroundings, offers one of the most enjoyable and relaxing tests of golf in the country.

Each of the three nine hole loops begin and end at the clubhouse, with the holes being routed among the towering pines that dominate the patch of land on which the resort sits. With 27 holes there is plenty of variety on offer at Forest Pines and with each nine hole loop comes a test that differs in difficulty. To ease yourself into your golf break at Forest Pines, head for the Beaches nine first as the three single shot holes are a good way to get the swing in groove before heading to the more testing Forest and Pines layouts.

Measuring 6,859 yards from the tips and with accuracy at a premium, Forest Pines can certainly hold its own when talented players tee it up but the forward tees mean that less experienced players can also enjoy this pine framed beauty.

Barry Ward, a former Golf Monthly Travel Editor once said of Forest Pines, “Being a minimalist, John (Morgan) has produced a refreshingly old fashioned course, one to delight the purists. There’s more than a suggestion of Braid about the mounded bunkering, for instance, and a hint of MacKenzie in the greens.” The presence of the names Braid and MacKenzie in the description of any golf course can only be a good thing.

And it’s not just the golf which is turning heads at Forest Pines. Q Hotels, previously named AA Hotel Group of the Year, support the golf at Forest Pines with a 188 room luxury hotel. The en-suite guestrooms are spacious and well equipped to ensure comfort throughout your stay. Extras include satellite television and WiFi technology, and the ever-attentive staff offer the most personal customer service going.

Away from the golf course you can spend your time washing away the stresses and strains of everyday life at the Reflections Health, Fitness & Spa centre. Beauty treatments include expert facials and massages, while the leisure club has the latest in technology. An 18-metre heated swimming pool, sauna, ice shower, heated loungers, aroma steam room and a state-of-the-art gymnasium are among the features on offer during your time away from the golf course.
