Spanish Golf Holidays – Las Colinas Golf & Country Club

By September 11, 2012No Comments

Las-Colinas-Golf-CourseSpain was thrust into the golfing spotlight in 1997 as Valderrama became the first course in continental Europe to host one of the biggest tournaments in golf, the Ryder Cup. Spain surpassed expectation, proving all sceptics wrong as a truly memorable Ryder Cup match unfolded on what was clearly a magnificent and testing golf course. It was immediately obvious that Valderrama was amongst the best golf courses in the world and the home European victory, led by the native golfing legend Seve Ballesteros, paved the way for Spanish golf.

Spain has now established itself as a popular golfing destination providing a host of renowned championship golf courses and luxury resorts, such as La Cala and La Manga. However, perhaps one of the most talked about, and fast becoming one of the most popular, golfing destinations is Las Colinas Golf & Country Club, situated in the South of Alicante in the Orihuela Costa. The Costa Blanca is already known for its excellent golf, however it is also regarded as one of the most commercialised areas along the coasts of Spain and, while many holiday-goers flock to the lively areas such as Benidorm each year, some can be put off by the busy, touristy atmosphere with many golfers opting for other areas such as the Algarve or Costa del Sol. However, in a valley between two unspoiled hills near the sea lies the resort at Las Colinas, a superb golfing experience as well as a unique place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the Mediterranean.

Blended perfectly into the natural landscape, this retreat is a golfer’s paradise featuring a championship course  with a unique design created by American architect Cabell B. Robinson. Robinson has worked with legendary designer Robert Trent Jones Sr. to create some of the world’s best golf courses, as well as a number of his own solo efforts, which are highly regarded, including Praia D’El Ray in Portugal, Royal Golf d’Evian in France and La Cala in Spain.

While the wide open fairways present players with a welcome sight from the tee, the numerous trees, water hazards and undulating greens can provide a challenging test for the best of golfers.

The Par 71 at Las Colinas makes excellent use of the fruit and pine forests and natural contours as it runs through the valley. There are a number of right to left dog leg’s which will suit players who favour the draw and also a number of short par threes which may not look much from the tee, however the tricky two tier and sloping greens place an importance on ball position in order to avoid a three putt or even keep the ball on the putting surface. One of the stand out holes is the par five 11th, players must avoid a vast array of bunkers lining almost all of the fairway up to the green, however there is little room to hold back as the hole measures an impressive 590 metres (649 yards) from the back tees. Although the course can be challenging, as you can imagine it provides an incredibly scenic golfing experience and the number of different tee options at each hole give the course great versatility that makes for an enjoyable round for golfers of all skill levels.

The course features some six lakes which come into play heavily in the closing holes to create a truly remarkable finish.

Las Colinas also boasts one of the best golfing academies in this part of the world. The academy provides quality coaching to golfers of all ages and abilities and Head PGA Professional Robert Mitchell has introduced a teaching philosophy that is not just limited to swing technique, allowing golfers to enjoy the learning experience as well as improve their game. From the superbly manicured natural grass practice area, to the latest teaching technology such as the high speed video technology and Ipad analysis of your swing, this academy offers an excellent learning experience and should be at the top of any golfer’s wish list if they are looking to improve on their game while enjoying a golf holiday. Furthermore, with these extensive learning facilities, as well as over 300 days of sunshine each year, what better place for a beginner to take up the great game?

Las Colinas is managed by Troon Golf, the world leader in golf course management, development and marketing. As with all golf courses managed by Troon Golf, Las Colinas boasts superb maintenance of both the golf course and its surrounding facilities, allowing players to enjoy manicured fairways and true greens which are kept in pristine conditions throughout the year. As well as its maintenance, Troon Golf strive to provide an excellent level of customer service which is evident at Las Colinas, supplying an attention to detail that makes for the ultimate golf experience. The Clubhouse is a lavish Mediterranean design, situated conveniently close to both the 1st and 10th tees. It features a restaurant bar, pro shop and other sporting facilities.

The club also provides a wide range of other sporting facilities including clay tennis courts, a gym and bike rental.

Guests can also enjoy a variety of water sports at one of the many marinas in the area. The calm waters and gentle breeze provide perfect conditions for sailing, windsurfing, water skiing and jet-skiing. The setting also provides a great place to enjoy the natural landscape by taking a scenic walk and exploring the numerous orange and lemon groves, old towns and villages, beaches, coves and cliffs and the resort even boasts its own nature trail that runs for 3 kilometres through the Mediterranean woods. By preserving the natural environment, offering excellent sporting facilities and the convenient location, Las Colinas have created the perfect holiday destination for anyone who enjoys an active outdoor lifestyle.

Las Colinas offers a choice of three modern accommodation options, 2 or 3 bedroom apartments, terraced 3 bedroom villas with a private garden and individual 4 or 5 bedroom villas with gardens and a private swimming pool. The residences are ideal for both weekend breaks and longer holidays each providing all the modern services and amenities expected of a five star resort such as this, including air conditioning, television with international channels, Wifi, and a fully equipped kitchen. All guests are welcome to relax by the infinity pool with open views of the sea from the privacy of the Beach Club at Las Colinas. Situated at La Glea beach in Campoamor, just a few minutes away from the resort, Las Colinas Beach Club provides the perfect hideaway.

Las Colinas Beach Club allows guests to unwind at the bar or take a refreshing dip in the infinity pool while enjoying the views of the stunning Mediterranean surroundings.

The secluded location of Las Colinas, tucked away amongst the unspoiled natural Mediterranean landscape, is perhaps its most attractive attribute, however the resort is also in the perfect location to go and explore the nearby towns. Alicante, known for its long sandy beaches and historic architecture, is a place where visitors can experience a true Spanish atmosphere which is often lost in the more commercialised destinations in this part of the world. The resort is also just a short distance from Murcia, one of the country’s major cities. Murcia is home to numerous beaches and coves and the region is known for its vast range of wellness and beauty centres and a number of its beaches are considered as open-air spas with the hyper-saline waters of the Mar Menor.

As Spain’s newest five star golf resort, Las Colinas is certainly up there with the best resorts that Europe has to offer. For those wishing to take a European golf break, Las Colinas Golf & Country Club will not disappoint and with a range of excellent value offers, now is the perfect time to take advantage of this superb resort.
