Golfers face a tough decision when choosing where to play next in Portugal as there are a number of top class courses and world-class resorts, especially in the Algarve, but if you are looking for a golf holiday to Portugal and want to play the best courses, then Praia D’El Rey has to be at the top of the list.

Having recently travelled there myself, I’ll be giving you the Top 5 Reasons why Praia D’El Rey needs to be on your list to play in Portugal.

1 – The Courses

Praia D’El Rey Resort is home to one of the best links courses in Europe which was ranked as the 8th best course in Portugal by Top 100 Golf Courses, and is now managing the nearby West Cliffs course which has recently opened and is already being tipped to become the best golf course in Portugal.

The Praia D’El Rey links course plays as a tale of two-nines as the front nine is a sensational parkland style course with pine trees lining the fairways, whilst the back nine provides a picturesque links style course with sand dunes along the coastline. It’s a course that is more designed for the experienced golfers as measuring at over 7000 yards off the back tees with strong winds near the coast, it certainly plays it length, however, there are 4 other tees to choose from so intermediate golfers will find it an enjoyable test as well and, after-all, all level of golfers can marvel at the countless display of memorable holes.

The West Cliffs course is a recently opened course, designed by the Dye Designs Group, and is just 10 minutes away from the Praia D’El Rey Resort. The course plays as a stunning links course along the Silver Golf Coast and provides incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a unique experience for golfers as the course combines the greenery of natural vegetation with sand dunes, and a variety of elevation changes to provide these great views of the sea. It’s certainly got all the ingredients to be the best course in Portugal and would encourage anyone to play it and see, as no two-holes are the same and it will be a memorable round for all involved.

2 – Leisure Facilities

The Resort has a number of activities for guests to get involved in, whether it’s playing tennis on one of the 7 tennis courts, swimming in one of the many indoor/outdoor pools, having a spa treatment in the Kalyan Spa in the Marriott or working out in the gym at the Marriott.

3 – 5* Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort

All great resorts, need great accommodation to match and with the 5* Praia D’El Rey Marriott available it certainly has that. The Hotel is ideally located alongside the back-nine of the golf course facing out over the Atlantic Ocean, whilst also being just a 5 minute shuttle to the clubhouse.

If golfers aren’t looking for the hotel experience, however, Praia D’El Rey also has the option of stunning townhouses at The Beachfront which would be ideal for larger groups or scenic and spacious apartments in The Village, which are all similar distances to the golf course as The Marriott.

4 – Restaurants

One thing I definitely noticed at Praia D’El Rey is the variety of food options. Staying at the Marriott, guests have the choice of the main restaurant, Tempera, which is where breakfast is served as well as a delicious buffet dinner which has every food you can think of. There is then the ‘Contato’ which is a friendly bar atmosphere by the hotel lobby which is ideal for a drink or meal whilst overlooking the Ocean. There are then the bars & restaurants which are only open seasonally at the Marriott, which include the ‘Romy’ which is largely an Italian restaurant but with some excellent beef dishes, the ‘Mare’ which is an exquisite seafood restaurant overlooking the coast, and then the Pool Bar which is the main place for snacks and light lunches throughout the day.

Outside the Marriott, there is then the Clubhouse which had me sold with it’s portion size of chips as well as its extensive dinner menu so that’s certainly a must after a round of golf. It’s worth noting though that the Clubhouse has an area for post-golf drinks and food but there is also a restaurant which would need to be booked in advance.

5 – The Location

Although the Algarve might seem like the obvious location for a golf holiday to Portugal, there is also the reasonably undiscovered area around Lisbon which hosts some of the best golf courses in Europe…this is where Praia D’El Rey comes in.

Praia D’El Rey is located about an hour North from Lisbon along the Silver Golf Coast and offers 2 of the best courses in Portugal so it provides a different experience for golfers in Portugal as you can enjoy a relaxing and secluded atmosphere along the beach at Praia D’El Rey whilst playing the best golf courses in the country.
