It\u2019s fair to say that, while on the course, golfers speak a language that would be unfamiliar to pretty much everybody else on the planet; a language that can only be learned through years of toiling away on the fairways, trying to get a ridiculously small ball into an even smaller hole!<\/p>\n
Some golfers talk the talk even when they aren\u2019t walking the proverbial walk and most of the time; the golfing jargon that comes out of their mouths certainly isn\u2019t 100% honest.<\/p>\n
To clear things up a bit, we thought we\u2019d knock up a little glossary of things golfers say and what they REALLY mean!<\/p>\n
When your matchplay opponent holes a 10 footer for a half:<\/b> \u201cWell in.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
Translation = <\/b>\u201cLucky git.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

After your playing partner takes three shots to escape from a bunker:<\/b> \u201cThere\u2019s no sand \/ too much sand in this bunker.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
Translation = <\/b>\u201cI have no idea how to hit bunker shots.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
\n
When shaking hands on the first tee:<\/b> Golfer 1 – \u201cPlay well mate.\u201d<\/i> Golfer 2 – \u201cYes, have a good game.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
Translation = <\/b>Golfer 1 – \u201cI hope you hack it around and run out of golf balls.\u201d<\/i> Golfer 2\u00a0 –\u00a0 \u201cAnd I you.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

When you partner misses a tap in for a half down the 18th:<\/b> \u201cHard luck.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
Translation = <\/b>\u201cYESSSSSSSSSS!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
\n
When you\u2019re in the clubhouse explaining your most recent + 0.1: <\/b>\u201cI played well, I just didn\u2019t score.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n
Translation = <\/b>\u201cMy par down the last was the first one of the day; I only hit two fairways, missed most of the greens and couldn\u2019t hole a putt to save my life.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

When the \u201cbig hitter\u201d who\u2019s obsessed with how far he hits it gets outdriven for the 1st<\/sup> time in the round:<\/b> \u201cThat came so far out of the heel I almost missed the ball!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n Translation: <\/b>\u201cHow the hell did he just knock it past me?!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n When explaining your matchplay loss to the team captain:<\/b> \u201cHe just couldn\u2019t miss a putt.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n Translation = <\/b>\u201cHe outplayed me all day, fully deserved the win and I can\u2019t putt for toffee.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n After hitting an approach shot into the trees at the back of the green: <\/b>\u201cI got a massive flyer.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n Translation = <\/b>\u201cI picked the wrong club.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n When explaining yet another snap hook into the cabbage: <\/b>\u201cI just can\u2019t hit this driver. The shaft is too whippy.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n Translation = <\/b>\u201cI just can\u2019t hit a driver.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n After a 10 foot putt misses the whole by a mile: <\/b>\u201cHow the hell does that putt break uphill?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n Translation = <\/b>\u201cI can\u2019t read greens to save my life.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n While trying to help your matchplay opponent find their golf ball in the tall rough: <\/b>\u201cYou\u2019d have to stand on it to find it in this stuff.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n Translation = <\/b>\u201cI really don\u2019t want you to find this golf ball…can\u2019t I just have the hole?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n 50 yards up the 1st<\/sup> fairway after teeing off with someone you only just met: <\/b>\u201cSo what do you do for work then?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n Translation = <\/b>\u201cI couldn\u2019t care less what you do for work but four hours is a long time not to talk to someone.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n After hitting the ball 50 yards short of the driveable par-4 in summer: <\/b>\u201cThat gust of wind came out of nowhere!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n Translation <\/b>= \u201cAbsolutely buttoned it, couldn\u2019t hit it any better and after waiting for the green to clear for 10 minutes I need an excuse…quick!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n After hitting the ball 50 yards short of the driveable par-4 in winter:<\/b> \u201cI\u2019d have got there with a bit of run in the summer; the fairways are so soggy!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n Translation <\/b>= \u201cAbsolutely buttoned it, couldn\u2019t hit it any better and after waiting for the green to clear for 10 minutes I need an excuse…quick!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n After pitching it 40 feet short of the hole with 1 foot of backspin: <\/b>\u201cI was really hurt by the spin on that one.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n Translation = <\/b>\u201cI GOT BACKSPIN! I have no idea how I did it but I GOT BACKSPIN!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n After slicing another one into the trees: <\/b>\u201cThis is a drawer\u2019s golf course.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n Translation = \u201c<\/b>I started that right and with my usual 40 yards of slice and there isn\u2019t a golf course on earth I\u2019d score well on today.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n On getting a plugged lie in a bunker: <\/b>\u201cI can\u2019t believe it\u2019s plugged…these new bunkers are such a joke!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n Translation = <\/b>\u201cHaving hit my ball straight into a bunker from a great height, I was hoping to defy physics and get lucky with a perfect lie.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n On leaving an Eagle Putt just short:<\/b> \u201cHit it for God\u2019s sake!\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n Translation =<\/b> \u201cI GOT A BIRDIE! I GOT A BIRDIE!
