Plenty of tournament venues look good on television, but Crans-sur-Sierre looked improbable. Fairways cut into the mountainside, chalet roofs close enough to feel part of the course and those huge Alpine peaks sitting behind the action like a painted backdrop that someone had overdone. Watching Seve Ballesteros<\/a> and Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Olaz\u00e1bal<\/a> shape shots in that setting left a proper mark. The idea of playing golf at roughly 1,500 metres above sea level, where the ball flies that little bit farther and every strike seems to hang in the air a fraction longer, lodged itself firmly on the bucket list.<\/p>\n

So when my son and I started piecing together a road trip across Europe, I only had one non-negotiable. Arriving in the Swiss Alps<\/h2>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The journey up sets the tone beautifully. You climb through the Valais Valley with a proper sense of ascent, the road twisting through hairpins before the landscape opens into Crans-Montana. It is one of those mountain resorts where golf does not sit on the edge of town hidden away behind gates. It is right there in the middle of things, tucked among hotels, chalets, shops and caf\u00e9s, which gives the whole experience a slightly surreal feel. One minute you are walking through a resort village, the next you are looking down onto one of the great tournament finishing holes in European golf.[\/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”37398″ animation=”Fade In” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”center” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][vc_column_text]Past the public car park, the clubhouse sits above the 18th green and immediately gives off that old-established tournament-club atmosphere. Inside, the welcome was exactly what you hope for on a trip like this: warm, relaxed and completely unforced. Behind the 1st tee there is a well-stocked pro shop with Omega European Masters gear and club merchandise that can do serious damage to your holiday budget if you are weak around logoed golf kit.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Just as compelling is the board of champions. It is the sort of roll call that makes you slow down: Seve, Olaz\u00e1bal, Sergio Garc\u00eda, Craig Stadler, Nick Price, Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, Danny Willett, Matt Fitzpatrick and Thriston Lawrence. When a club can connect your own round to that list, it changes the mood before you have even pegged a ball.[\/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”37396″ animation=”Fade In” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”center” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][vc_column_text]We stayed nearby at Hotel \u00c9trier, a classic chalet-style base that suited a golf trip perfectly. It offered the right mix of comfort and convenience, with mountain views, a pool and spa for loosening up after the round and an easy walk into town and over to the course. In a resort like this, that matters. World-Class Practice Facilities<\/h2>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The evening before our round, we walked down to the practice ground situated in the middle of the course. Framed by ski lifts crossing overhead, a reminder that several holes double as ski slopes in winter, the range feels like the Tour-level facility it is. It features TrackMan<\/a> setups off mats, a pristine grass area, and a restaurant terrace overlooking the valley.[\/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”37400″ animation=”Fade In” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”center” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][vc_column_text]We also tried out the indoor putting green area, which was paid for by former Masters champion Adam Scott, whose family has ties to the region. Teeing Off on the Severiano Ballesteros Course<\/h2>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]On the morning of our round, after warming up on the range, we headed to the first tee of the Severiano Ballesteros Course, home of the Omega European Masters. We were paired with two delightful local lady members, one of whom had been a member for 45 years, who proved to be wonderful hosts for a friendly match.<\/p>\n

Before putting out, we took a walk to the right side of the green to inspect the plaque commemorating Seve Ballesteros\u2019 legendary shot from behind the wall over the swimming pool during his victory.
