Simon Holmes On a clear day the views to Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran are the sort that stay with you long after the scorecard has been binned. This is links golf with a grandstand backdrop, but it is also a proper resort, which matters when you are planning a trip for a mixed group rather than a pure golf marathon.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]The Edwardian hotel, first opened in 1906, gives Turnberry much of its character. There is a sense of occasion about arriving here that few resorts can match, yet it does not feel trapped in the past. The extensive refurbishment has sharpened everything up, blending historic architecture with the kind of comfort you want after 36 holes in an Ayrshire breeze. [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Bedrooms and suites are beautifully finished, the food and drink offering is strong, and the spa and leisure facilities make it a realistic choice for couples and families as well as golfing groups. If you want more privacy or flexibility, the lodges add another useful layer to the trip planning.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”37515″ animation=”Fade In” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”center” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]That wider resort experience is a big reason Turnberry works so well. Golfers can chase bucket-list rounds while non-golfers still feel they are at a genuine luxury destination rather than a place built only around tee times. For the designated organiser, that is a big tick. You can build a serious golf holiday here without compromising on the rest of the experience.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-1-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color=”#fcfbf9″ background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”10px” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”1px” column_border_color=”#e3dfd9″ bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]
The Ailsa’s best golf comes from how it asks you to choose a line, commit to it and then accept the consequences. On several holes the ideal angle into the green is gained by flirting with trouble from the tee. That is proper championship architecture. If the wind is fresh, the course can play every bit its reputation, especially when you get exposed on the outward stretch and then have to control trajectory on the way home. It is dramatic, exacting and memorable in equal measure.[/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”37522″ animation=”Fade In” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”center” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][vc_column_text]Then there is the King Robert the Bruce course, which gives Turnberry a second championship option rather than a supporting act. This is not simply a nice extra round to fill an itinerary. It has its own identity, using elevation changes and coastline brilliantly to produce a layout that is fun, varied and often more playable for the wider travelling golfer. You get heroic views, bold bunkering and enough movement in the land to keep you thinking from the opening tee shot onwards.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Where the Ailsa can feel like a heavyweight title fight, the Bruce often feels more inviting from the tee, though that should not be confused with easy. Approach angles still matter, misses still need to be on the correct side and the coastal wind remains the course’s most reliable defence. Together, the two courses give Turnberry real depth. One day you can take on an Open venue, the next you can enjoy a different championship examination without ever leaving the resort.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]
call 0800 043 6644

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self”…

[10

post-37501","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-course-reviews

Set hard against the Ayrshire coast and looking out across the Firth of Clyde, the place has that rare ability to stop golfers in their tracks before a club even comes out of the bag.

Championship Golf Layouts

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]At the heart of the resort is the Ailsa Course, and let’s not dress it up too carefully, this is one of the great thrill rides in world golf. A four-time Open Championship host, the Ailsa is the course most golfers picture when Turnberry gets mentioned: cliff-edge carries, the lighthouse, rumpled fairways and green sites perched beside the sea. What the modern redesign achieved was important. It toughened the championship test and sharpened strategic lines without losing the holes and visuals people travelled here to see.[/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”37520″ animation=”Fade In” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”center” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][vc_column_text]The stretch around the turn is still the one that gets all the camera time, and for good reason. The famous 9th is one of the best par 3s in Scotland, a one-shotter played out toward the sea with the lighthouse framing the target. It is not just a pretty postcard hole either. Club selection is everything because the wind can come off the left, hard off the water, and anything turning over too much can be in real trouble. Even when the yardage looks manageable on paper, this is no place to get cute with a soft swing.

This is exactly the sort of addition modern golf resorts should be making. Not every round needs to be 18 holes and not every group wants another full-blooded championship test on the afternoon they arrive. With holes ranging from roughly 100 to 220 yards, Trump 12 creates space for a proper match, a skins game, nearest-the-pin chaos or simply a relaxed knock when the light is starting to soften over the coast.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Par-3 courses only work if the greens are interesting and the shot values change from hole to hole. Turnberry has leaned into that. The imaginative green complexes, contours and water features mean this is not a pitch-and-putt afterthought. One hole might ask for a flighted wedge that lands softly on a narrow shelf, the next a punched mid-iron into the breeze with a bailout that leaves an awkward up-and-down. It is the sort of short course that can settle bets very quickly.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”37524″ animation=”Fade In” hover_animation=”none” alignment=”center” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” image_loading=”default” max_width=”100%” max_width_mobile=”default”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]Backing up the on-course offering is the Turnberry Golf Academy, which is one of the strongest practice environments you will find at a Scottish resort. The TrackMan-equipped driving range is a major plus for players who want useful feedback rather than mindless ball beating. Indoor TrackMan iO simulators keep things moving if the weather closes in, advanced swing analysis adds a layer for those booking tuition and SAM PuttLab gives genuine insight for golfers who know too many trips are ruined by poor work on the greens.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The short-game facilities are a big selling point as well. If you are heading out to tackle firm links turf, tight run-off areas and breeze-affected wedge shots, there is real value in arriving early and getting your eye in around the practice greens. The expansive Cairngorms putting green is ideal for pace work before a round, while the Wee Links pitch-and-putt adds one more enjoyable option for mixed groups or families. The important thing is that Turnberry does not just give you great golf courses. It gives you the tools to prepare properly for them.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]
