Close House

Nestled in the tranquillity of the Tyne Valley, the Close House estate is submerged in natural beauty. With two golf courses artfully woven into the Northumberland countryside, Close House has become one of the top golf destinations in England. The two Lee Westwood-designed courses, The Colt and The Filly, are the only two in the country to bear his mark, Lee also proudly names Close House as his home club. The Colt is the leading attraction, having hosted the European Tour’s British Masters in 2017.

Found only 20-minutes from Newcastle by car, Close House can be reached easily by anyone in the UK, if travelling from the south of England taking the train to Newcastle is a good option. The main accommodation at Close House is the stunning country house hotel, a timeless property offering exquisitely appointed rooms and facilities. In 2018, Close House added The Lodge and The Pavillion accommodation options, ideal for small groups, both sleep up to four golfers and offer both privacy and luxury in abundance.

Lee Westwood Colt Course

STATS

Par: 71

Designed by: Lee Westwood

Open for play: 2011

TEES

Blue: 6,813 yards

White: 6,308 yards

Yellow: 5,845 yards

Green: 5,133 yards

Red: 4,751 yards

Signature hole: par 3, 9th hole

The 18-hole championship Lee Westwood Colt Course was opened in May 2011 and was voted one of the top 100 golf courses in England, less than 8 months after it opened. The 6813-yard layout tips its hat to the great English golf architect Harry Colt (who designed Wentworth, St Georges Hill, Sunningdale and Swinley Forest among others). While nothing is copied directly, the rectangular tees, the bunker forms, and the variety in Par threes are all features conceived from the distilled themes of this most brilliant architect.

Lee Westwood says: "The Colt Course is a really good test of golf. There are a lot of good holes on it. It’s fairly undulating and there is quite a drop from the start of the golf course to the finish; some 300 feet in all. For me, the hole I always remember is the par-3 9th. It’s a lovely little par 3 and a very testing hole over a lake with the wall behind. It’s on the side of the drive where everyone drives in and sees the hole so it sits very well. If you make 3 here you should walk away very happy."

As mentioned, Close House will be hosting the 2017 British Masters, and it will mark the first time a European Tour event is played at Close House.

"It's great to see The British Masters back on the European Tour schedule and especially the way the event has been run over the last two years, with a focus on an innovative approach and getting the likes of Luke and Poults to host the event. I'm really proud to have the chance to take over the reigns next year and take the event to the North East and Close House. Obviously I'm connected to the resort and while I have a few ideas for the odd tweak to the course, I think it will be enjoyed by the players as it's a bit different to what we play on tour week in week out and the conditioning is always top class."

Lee Westwood Filly Course

STATS

Par: 70

Designed by: Lee Westwood

Open for play: Re-opened in 2007

TEES

White: 6,034 yards

Yellow: 5,640 yards

Red: 5,150 yards

Originally built as a nine-hole course in 1964, the now 18-hole Lee Westwood Filly Course is situated in the grounds of the Close House Estate, providing stunning views of the Tyne Valley. The parkland layout was re-designed and re-opened in 2007. It now has 18 USGA specification greens, measures 6000 yards in length and plays as a par 70 from the medal tees. The undulating greens provide a real test for your putting skills, but accuracy off the tee is paramount for good scoring. Having already held PGA professional events the course has proved challenging to golfers of all abilities.

Lee Westwood says: "The Filly is the easier of the two courses so if you don’t want as quite a demanding test, it’s the one for you. It’s a little less undulating but there are still some climbs and falls on it; it’s also a slightly shorter than the Colt. For the higher handicappers, it’s a nice and steady – although certainly not easy – test of golf."

The resort features top-class practice facilities, including an indoor and outdoor driving range with powertees, a putting green and short-game practice area. Be treated to first-class service, including complimentary club and shoe cleaning, as well as bag drop-off.

Accommodation at Close House

Located less than 8 miles from Newcastle Central Station and Newcastle International Airport, you will quickly find yourself relaxing in one of Northern England's most spectacular golf and leisure retreats.

Your golf break at Close House may be motivated primarily by the two courses, but luxury accommodation, fine dining and idyllic surroundings await at the resort's magnificent country house hotel. The 12 Courtyard suite-style rooms and four Terrace rooms are impeccably furnished, ensuring a stay that won't soon be forgotten.

Whether you are grabbing a quick bite after walking off the 18th or sitting down more formally to sample some of the Northumberland region's finest produce, Close House ensures a memorable dining experience. The resort's signature restaurant is No. 19, where highly regarded Head Chef Simon Walsh has made his mark with flavour-packed seasonal dishes made from the very best local produce. The restaurant offers panoramic views over the Tyne Valley.

For those looking for a more private golf break, one of the two new additions to the Close House estate is bound to be a perfect fit. The Lodge is a charming space for up to 4 golfers, a welcoming stone exterior leads into a stylish, cosy interior, complete with its own lounge and kitchen. Also able to sleep up to 4 golfers, the Pavillion is located in the heart of the Close House estate. This luxuriously appointed cottage has an elegant, modern feel, boasting two en-suite bedrooms, an open-plan lounge and a private kitchen. Did go and look at this accomadation and it was superb, all be it a bit of a walk or a short drive from the 19th. With two double bedrooms and a kitchen diner and open plan lounge it would be perfect for two golfing couples who could enjoy the late ecening views from the terrace across the course.

WE were 'upgraded' to the Courtyard rooms which were very special. Staff were very unintrusive and very efficient. The food was good and plentiful, but breakfast took a long time being served. I'm pleased we weren't in the Lodge because it was a long way from the bar/restaurant (although the Lodge's rooms and facilities looked equally as good as those in the main accommodation block).

We played off the white tees as this was a shorter and flatter course and it played slightly easier than the Colt off yellows. As with most courses played for the first time, hindsight would've made it a more enjoyable experience. If I went back I would buy a stroke-saver for each: a simple distance measurer wasn't sufficient.

This stay there was a club event in front of us which resulted in particularly slow play as all 4 players were adamant they would putt out. They didn't allow us to play through as the two other four balls ahead we're involved in the competition as well. Apart from the length of the round time wise the course was excellent and greens in very good condition
