The Dundrum House golf course was designed by Ireland's 1995 Ryder cup hero, Philip Walton, who has laid out a challenging course among the rolling hills, meandering rivers and thick flora of the estate.
This par 72 course uses the natural features of woodland and parkland and the Multeen River to present the golfer with one challenging after another. Set against a backdrop of the Golden Vale of Tipperary, the views can be arresting and Dundrum House itself can be seen from many parts of the course. But it's worth staying focused on the course most of the time as the trout-filled Multeen River comes into play on quite a few holes. There's also a thoroughly entertaining loop that runs through a small wood at the 11th, 12 and 13th holes to keep you on your guard.
From the blue tees the course is a mammoth 7056 yards with a par of 72, but multiple teeing areas make it a joy for all standards of golfer. Walton's favourite hole is the 335-yard 14th. This is the shortest par-4 on the course but there is no room for error, with six bunkers which leave a very tight fairway to hit. The second shot has to carry the lake to the front of the green with a large bunker and out of bounds waiting for the over-hit shot at the back. A par is always welcome here.
All in all, this course is both challenging and entertaining and if you're touring Ireland from Dublin to play the legendary links courses of Ireland's south-west, this resort is well worth stopping off to stay and play en-route, as well as being an excellent destination in its own right.
