Golf Courses at La Cala Resort
Campo America Course
Designed by: Cabell Robinson
Opened for play: 1990
Did you know? La Cala resort achieved a Guinness World Record in 2007 by hosting the largest one day golf competition with 614 players.
White: 6,571 yards, SSS 72
Yellow: 6,124 yards, SSS 69
Blue: 5,442 yards, SSS 71
Red: 5,036 yards, SSS 69
Signature Hole – No. 16: Par 3, 135 yards (White Tees)
Despite being stroke
index 17, the spectacular scenery at the short, 135 yard par 3 makes for a
memorable hole. The elevated tee overlooks the whole property and the panoramic
view extends over the pond in front of the green, past the putting surface and
all the way to the coast which is several miles away.
La Cala’s Campo America Course contains some truly spectacular holes. These include the par 5s at 6, 9 and 18, and the quite remarkable par 3 at 16. The hilly topography on which the course sits means the course presents a stern test, with plenty of forced carries over steep brush-covered side slopes. Nearly three quarters of the greens are raised above the level of the fairways too, adding yet another challenge for golfers.
In addition, the greens present small targets for which to aim at and are well protected by strategic bunkering, demanding accurate and well-judged shots on the approach. However, the Campo America course is made a slightly easier driving course than Campo Asia with its wide, linked fairways and relatively small number of bunkers allowing a more generous margin for error.
As a championship course located at the foot of the Mijas Mountains, Campo America’s international status is also enhanced by spectacular views to the Sierra de Ojén and Mediterranean Sea.
Campo Asia Course
Designed by: Cabell Robinson
Opened for play: 1989
Did you know? The Royal Spanish Golf Federation confirmed that La Cala Resort is the biggest golf complex in Spain.
White: 6,479 yards, SSS 71
Yellow: 5,918 yards, SSS 68
Blue: 5,232 yards, SSS 70
Red: 4,885 yards, SSS 69
Signature Hole – No. 11: Par 3, 170 yards (White Tees)
Campo Asia offers many fantastic holes and after a straight-jacketing front nine, the back nine provides no let up. The par 3 at 11 is one of the most spectacular holes on the resort. The hole provides golfers with unforgettable panoramic views of the whole resort, Mijas village and Mediterranean.
Despite being the oldest of the three La Cala courses, Campo Asia is still well respected by golfers, and for many it is seen as the toughest test at the resort. Its layout is even hillier, the fairways tighter and the bushes more impenetrable than the neighbouring Campo America course, which already offers a sizeable challenge. In this respect, the course certainly puts a premium on accuracy and control.
While providing a tougher test off the tees, the course maintains similar elevation changes to that on the hilly America course, with strategic greenside bunkers in place at many of the raised putting surfaces.
The four par 5s, with the exception of the 1st, are all reachable in two for longer hitters, but golfers should beware of the concealed contours on the greens and the water that lurks on a couple of the holes. Sometimes less can be more when it comes to the second shots here!
The four short holes on the course are between 160 and 185 yards long, with three of them played from elevated tees to greens of terrific variety. This exciting course will guarantee a testing round for golfers of all abilities.
Campo Europa Course
Designed by: Cabell Robinson
Opened for play: 2005
Did you know? In 2005, designer Cabel Robinson branded the new course as ‘dramatic’ stating that ‘it will be easier for the average golfer.’
Previously Hosted: Q-School for Ladies European tour (November 2005 and 2006), Spanish pairs professional championship (2007), Ladbrokescasino.com Masters from the Ivobank EuroPro Tour.
White: 6,576 yards, SSS 72
Yellow: 6,245 yards, SSS 70
Blue: 5,281 yards, SSS 70
Red: 4,982 yards, SSS 68
Signature Hole – No. 14: Par 3, 254 yards (White Tees)
The Campo Europa course provides an easier game for the average golfer, with generous fairways, flatter terrain and slightly larger greens than Campo America and Asia. However, the presence of excellent bunkering throughout and the appearance of the idyllic Ojen River on eight of the holes ensure that your course management cannot afford to be too relaxed.
14 of the 18 holes are visible from the tees, as golfers can also enjoy the fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and resort. At one point players must cross the river over an impressive 45m bridge and there are four other smaller bridges along its banks around the course as well. Campo Europa’s course is a fine addition to the resort, and is by no means a poor third, but rather a more manageable proposition for higher handicappers and perhaps beginners looking for a more relaxed test of golf.
At the maximum limit of distance for a par 3, the 14th not only presents a lengthy tee shot, but a perilous one too. A long carry is needed over river and scrub, leaving little margin for error.
La Cala’s practice facilities include a six hole Par 3 course which is a great place for those who wish to practice the short game, or for beginners who may not yet feel prepared for the championship courses. The course doesn’t lack quality either, and its unique par 3 designs gives cause for its ranking as the best par 3 design on the Costa del Sol.
The short game practice facilities are located adjacent to the golf club house, where a large putting green, separate chipping and putting areas with two bunkers.
At The Clubhouse
La Cala’s clubhouse is designed in a traditional Andulacian style and is a buzzing hive of activity. The restaurant and bar provide guests with the chance of breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as snacks and drinks served throughout the day. All of the top daily sporting events are televised on the satellite TV too. The Laurel Restaurant at the Club House is open from breakfast right through to the evening.
A wide range of clothing and accessories are available at the pro shop. Club cleaning services are offered, along with the opportunity to purchase personalised items. Golfers are also able to partake within the rental service of both shoes and clubs. Outside the pro shop and club house is one of the biggest golf buggy fleets in Europe, with 183 modern electric and 55 petrol buggies available for hire.
On top of the stunning golfing facilities on offer, La Cala holds a squash court, two tennis courts, a fitness centre and running circuits. La Cala is also just a short distance from the Mediterranean Sea, where water skiing, sailing and kite surfing are on offer. Finally, La Cala would be pleased to organise horse riding, mountain biking or trekking on the most stunning Sierra de Mijas nature trails.
Hotel La Cala holds a central position within the resort, between the golf courses. The idyllic rural retreat is built in a traditional Andalusian style and with 107 rooms, has a choice of six different room categories, all of which have views onto the golf course.
Many restaurants are also on site at La Cala, each with its own unique style and character. La Terraza Restaurant, offers European Cuisine with a distinct twist and promises for a special evening, while La Bodega provides visitors with a more relaxed and informal dinner. Two bars are also available-The Pool Bar Limonda, and The Lobby Bar Naranjo.La Cala resort offers internal transfers to guests of La Cala Hotel to its La Cala Golf Academy free of charge all year round. La Cala Resort Reviews
Your Golf Travel’s organisation for our recent holiday to La Cala was excellent and from pick up at the airport to drop off back there at the end of the trip, we did not encounter one single problem.
For our group of 12 golfers La Cala was superb, with three really great courses (which suited all levels of our group) all on site so no transfers were needed to and from the courses, making it very convenient indeed. The hotel and accommodation was top value with extremely helpful and friendly staff, and it was nice to relax around the pool after each round.
The Hotel prices were reasonable, but it was only a €15 cab ride into town each night and it was nice to sample some of the very good local restaurants.
All in all it was a great experience, and from the feedback of all of our group, I’ve no doubts you will be hearing from us soon to book another golf holiday for next year.
The three courses at La Cala all have their own special characteristics, with spectacular scenery from almost every hole being the one common factor. The Asia Course is a fairly tight, unforgiving 18 holes and needing a fair supply of balls for the average player to complete, I stopped keeping score at Asia after the first 9.
America is a very pleasant, friendlier 18 and the Europe Course has some really good testing holes. This one let me note my best score ever, 60 net.
Many holes at La Cala have considerable height variations. La Cala gives players at all levels a good test of their abilities. The course when we were there was well maintained with both fairways and greens good.
We really enjoyed the golfing experience, being picky the only negative point being the bunkers filled with grit instead of sand.
The hotel had very friendly and helpful staff, rooms were pretty average but acceptable. There is a very good selection of wellness facilities, mostly included in the room price; a really nice place to hang out and relax after a round of golf!
Breakfast was the culinary highlight of the day and was very, very good indeed. However, disappointingly this wasn't the same in the restaurant at lunch or dinner – a very limited menu, slightly expensive and in our experience poor quality. We quickly decided that lunch and dinner outside of the hotel would be preferable.
There are many tourist restaurants in the local town at the coast just a 10 minute drive away but just two minutes from the hotel there's a very good restaurant which we often frequented.
Car hire is so very cheap in Spain, and we’d highly recommend this to have the freedom of your own.
La Cala is an experience we are intending to repeat in the
On behalf of our group I would like to thank YGT for organising an amazing golfing holiday for us. The La Cala resort was spectacular. We were fortunate enough to play all 3 courses which were all in fantastic condition. The layout of the holes were amazing and having a variety of tees for different abilities ensured all our party from low to high handicappers enjoyed the experience. We cannot decide which of the courses we enjoyed the most as they were all so varied with spectacular views. The thing we were most impressed with was the friendliness of the staff. On previous trips we have felt under pressure from rangers pushing us and hurrying us even if we couldn't go any quicker due to the groups in front!! However in La Cala we had a lovely reception on the first tee and the rangers came round to ask us if we were enjoying our round and if there was anything they could do for us- so refreshing.
On completion of our round we ate at the club house where they was a lovely and reasonably priced menu. We then retired to the spa which was fantastic. With a complementary 90 mins a day in the large outdoor and indoor bubble pools we felt so relaxed.
We ate in the hotel for 2 evenings and down in La Cala town for 2 nights, a taxi is just 13 euros into the town.
The rooms were adequate but had lovely large balconies where sat out at night which was a nice bonus.
The transfers from the airport organised by YGT were great. They were there waiting for us and helped with the luggage. The drivers were really friendly and gave us lots of information about the area.
Overall this has been our favourite golf resort and we have been going as a group for the last 7 years. We would definitely return and would highly recommend for any group wanting great golf and good service.
We would also be more than happy to recommend YGT. I certainly won't be using anyone else to organise my holidays. As the group organiser it was hassle free and so easy. Thank you.
We played a few rounds on The Asia Course at La Cala and have to say we really enjoyed the course. It’s quite narrow from the tee and small greens means you have to be accurate with your approaches. I would say it would be a tough track for anybody playing off 18 or more but there are tees to cater for all abilities, as is the case on the other courses as well.
The America Course was wider, more forgiving and very picturesque indeed, with some really, really nice holes. I would say this course would suit all levels a little better than the Asia Course and unfortunately, with the Europe Course closed for maintenance, we couldn’t play it. It did look very nice though!
The 19th hole is also really nice. It has really nice views and the food and drink are both reasonably priced and of a high standard.
That standard continues at the hotel, with comfortable guestrooms, a great swimming pool and excellent dining options.
La Cala is a bit off the beaten track but with 3 fabulous golf courses on-site, not to mention everything else on offer at the resort, there is no need to leave the confines of the resort during your stay...simply relax and enjoy the Spanish sun!
Overall I would rate it 8.5/10 and it was certainly nicer than our previous visits to Spain.
As per our last few trips via YGT, the team didn't disappoint us at all with all of the pre-arranged items such as airport transfers, hotel reservations and check-in at La Cala and our golf reservations all going like clockwork.
As for the La Cala resort and golf itself, everything you need is on your doorstep, with 3 magnificent courses all within a short walking distance of the hotel...you can get to the 1st tee in not time when you have buggies!
Food and drink aren't cheap unfortunately but that is the way at most modern 5* resorts.
Unfortunately the Europa course was closed for maintenance when we arrived and when we played it the greens were not good. We'd have happily played the America or Asia courses again instead but it wasn't to be.
In terms of rating the resort, golf courses, food, drink and location I would rate it around and 8 to 8.5 out of ten. The issues mentioned above prevent it from getting a higher mark.
In terms of recommending the YGT team, absolutely - as per usual another great trip and all going well we will be back for more next year!
La Cala Hotel & Golf Resort was fantastic for our golf break. In every department, the course’s are brilliant and with each layout being unique and charming in its own way.
We also really enjoyed the spa, swimming pool and restaurants, not to mention our villa which was outstandnig. The resort staff were impeccable and nothing we asked for was too much trouble...5*service from start to finish. The manager even visited us on the final hole to ask how are stay was, a very nice touch!
We were set to go to Portugal next year, but after this trip we are back to La Cala instead.
La Cala Hotel & Golf Resort in Spain gave us a fantastic 5 day golf holiday. We were there early September as a group of 6 split into 3 rooms. The temperature was perfect at just under 30 degrees (very acceptable) and the golf was simply stunning.
Even though the region had suffered badly through forest fires, the colours provided quite a juxtaposition between green and ash ridden land...I thought it a fantastic setting. The 3 courses each provide a different challenge and were in great condition. You can tell a lot of work has gone into them and the staff were extremely gracious in accommodating our 2 3-balls and moving our tee off times around to suit our needs. The courses were challenging, ranging from a tight short course to a medium to a long hard course and as such provided us with great variety throughout the week. The driving-range is about a 5 min drive away from the hotel but fear not, there's a free shuttle service from the reception at any time of day; all we needed to do was ask.
The 19th hole was great with a nice restaurant...you can see that a lot of recent investment has gone into it as the decor was modern and clearly recently refurbished.
In terms of the hotel I thought it had been thoroughly planned and thought through so as to cater for our blissful holiday. The rooms were clean and well looked after, with breakfast a sumptuous buffet of everything you could want to fuel up on before a long day in the sun. The staff? Extremely friendly and helpful and we all thought the Spa was the perfect place to relax after golf in the hot Spanish sun.
In terms of a rating, I have no hesitation in giving this place a 9/10.
As for YGT...10 as always. I would thoroughly recommend YGT to a friend.
After flying from Glasgow we arrived in Spain and found our transfer waiting for us in the arrivals section. The trip from the Airport to the La Cala Resort took about 30 minutes. La Cala was about 20 minutes from Fuengirola and about 10 minutes from La Cala Mihas. There aren’t many shops or supermarkets around so you have to rely on what’s on offer at the resort. That wasn’t a problem though as the food and drink at the resort is fantastic. It is a little pricey but what else would you expect from a five star resort?
The efficiency of the staff at the resort was impressive as everything was seen to in a speedy and professional manner. The buffet-style breakfast had more than enough variety for all tastes and it provided much needed energy for the day of golf ahead. Guestrooms are comfortable and have fantastic views across the mountains and the three resort golf courses. The on-site swimming pool was lovely and even though our golf break was booked for early June, the resort was quiet and peaceful.
The 3 golf courses themselves are truly excellent, each with their own set of challenges. Make sure you take plenty of balls as a wayward drive or iron shot will almost certainly cost you dearly, such is the balance between success and failure at La Cala. The buggy included in our golf holiday package was a Godsend as the courses are hilly and the Spanish sun would have made it hard work. I'd definately recommend a buggy for those who aren't gluttons for punishment!
I would rate La Cala as an 8/10 which would be higher if there was more convenient access to the local towns. As a resort in itself, La Cala is straight out of the top drawer and I would thoroughly recommend it to any golfers who are content with relaxing at the resort for the duration of their golf break.
Our golf holiday to La Cala was superb and we had a brilliant time. The golf courses were brilliant with many memorable holes. Already many of the lads are saying we have to make it a yearly event now so well done to both La Cala during our holiday and Your Golf Travel during the planning process.
We had an excellent golf trip to La Cala last week which ticked all of the boxes...even the weather was perfect! The golf courses are excellent, the accommodation is good and the general ambiance at the resort is really friendly and relaxing.
Thanks again to Your Golf Travel for organizing it so efficiently...we'll be in touch!
All of the courses (played on Asia and Europe) were thoroughly enjoyed by the golfers. The accommodation was nice. Well equipped and clean, it was more than ample for our requirements. The restaurant and club house both serve pretty good food and the service is quick, tidy and of a good standard.
The weather was amazing during our stay so I didn't visit spa much but the couple of appointments I did have were great. The best thing about La Cala is undoubtedly the location. The view from our room over the course was amazing and it was SO peaceful there. We'd definately go back and would love to stay longer so we could explore the area a little more...we just need a willing babysitter for the kids!
Thanks for your help with the bookings, all the relevant reservations for golf went very smoothly.
Just thought I'd let you know I had a great few days at La Cala, very gratetful for your advice and efficient service. The trip started off well as I got upgraded to first class on the flight out so enjoyed a champagne breakfast!! I was paired up with some real characters on all three rounds and managed to play to my handicap on the North and South courses but the Europa was super tough!! Am thinking of another long weekend at the end of May with some mates so will give you a call in due course. Cheers,
