1 Night, 2 Rounds
Set in 270 acres of Cheshire woodland, Mottram Hall is the sort of place you book when you want proper golf by day and a genuinely relaxing hotel by night. The 18th-century Georgian country house brings the character, while the resort facilities keep the whole group happy, even if not everyone wants 36 holes.
The championship course, host of the 2013 European Senior's PGA Championship, gives you two different feels in one round. The front nine is more open and scoreable if you're driving it well, but the back nine tightens up as it runs through denser woodland. Miss a fairway and you'll quickly learn that course management beats brute force around here. If you enjoy shaping tee shots and picking the right side of the fairway rather than just swinging hard, you'll have a lot of fun.
Location-wise, it's a very easy win for a short UK break. You're around 30 minutes from Manchester and less than 15 minutes from the Peak District, so it works for a quick escape, a society weekend, or a couple of nights tagged onto a city stay. The hotel sits tucked away in the leafy village of Mottram St Andrew, with Prestbury train station just 3 miles away if you're coming by rail.
Who is this for?
Golfers planning a short UK break who want championship golf, a quality spa and an easy drive or train ride from Manchester.
Who is it best for?
Couples and small groups who like strategic, tree-lined golf and want a full resort set-up on site, with dining, leisure facilities and somewhere worth staying even after the last putt drops.

Mottram Hall’s 7,006 yard 18-hole, Par 72 Championship golf course in Cheshire, is one of a kind. The host venue for the 2013 European Senior's PGA Championship; its tree-lined fairways and subtle undulating greens, present a challenge to even the most seasoned golfer.
Set in 270 acres of Cheshire's finest parkland and located one mile from the picturesque village of Prestbury, the tricky, well-guarded greens are broken up into two contrasting circuits of nine. The front nine, with its impressive backdrop of the 18th Century Hall, gently rolls over meadowland and offers the golfer many chances to make a score. The back nine winds through rich woodland and is a much more demanding test of golf.
Thanks to a £1.5 million refurbishment, the golfing facilities are second to none. Mid game, stop at the Halfway House for well-earned refreshments and light bites before taking on the last nine holes, or head upstairs to The Claret Jug restaurant at the end of your game and enjoy a cool beer and a hearty British classic.

The hotel has 120 bedrooms split between the Georgian main house and newer wings. The vibe is boutique and cosy rather than stiff, with Sealy beds, Egyptian cotton linens and well-finished rooms that suit couples and groups. Rooms range from Classic doubles through to Suites, with options for garden views, woodland outlooks, or direct access to the grounds. The design feels warm and inviting rather than corporate, which makes a difference when you're settling in after a long day on the course.
After golf, the spa is a standout in the region. It's five-bubble rated and includes the Alfresco ThermoSpace, a heated pool, indoor Jacuzzi, outdoor hydro-pool, sauna and a solid treatment menu if you've walked 18 on tired legs. The outdoor hydro-pool is particularly good in cooler weather, and the whole spa area is designed to feel calm and restorative rather than busy or rushed. If you prefer to keep moving, there's a well-equipped gym with up to 40 instructor-led classes a week, plus tennis courts and a FIFA-accredited football pitch for anyone looking to stay active beyond the course.
Food-wise, the AA Rosette-awarded restaurants cover the full weekend brief. You can go smart with three courses in the evening, keep it classic with afternoon tea in the lounge, or just grab breakfast and lighter bites around your tee time. The menus honour British heritage while weaving in international influences, and the quality is consistent enough to keep things interesting across a multi-night stay. The private gardens are a real bonus in good weather, and the grounds are landscaped to keep that calm, spa-like feel as you move around the estate.
Mottram Hall is located in Prestbury, Cheshire, about 30 minutes south of Manchester and less than 15 minutes from the Peak District National Park. The address is Wilmslow Road, Mottram St Andrew, Prestbury, Cheshire, SK10 4QT.

Check in was an issue as the hotel couldn’t find our booking, possibly took half an hour but eventually all was sorted.

Great value for money, the staff were fantastic, especially the girls behind the bar. Food service was disappointing though, some starters and mains came 20 minutes after others in our group had, had theirs!

We were disappointed with the hotel, it looked tired. Lack of cleaning in Barneys, we had to clear bits off chairs before we could sit down. Cobwebs in our rooms. Chipped paintwork, old furniture. No security lock on the bedroom door, part of the locking system had Bern removed leaving a door frame in need of an update. Looked in an outside toilet, staff were called to assist.

Bedrooms are averagely decorated. Not adequately sized beds, very narrow, Bathroom requires updating, very tired looking. Staff require better training/supervision. We waited 30 mins for a coffee and bacon bun as the one staff member was not coping with orders. Having to leave the hotel, walk down the road to another building when it’s raining and windy to have dinner is a joke!! This is obviously to keep all golfers together! Not somewhere these 12 lady golfers will be going back to soon!!

Saturdays round felt extremely slow, the two groups ahead were both playing multiple balls which was frustrating, we managed to get out earlier than expected on Sunday and finished in around 3 hours which was quite timely as the weather changed shortly after we’d finished.

Considering this course is played an awful lot, it was in excellent condition.

Good course with some very challenging holes drive it long and straight and you can't go far wrong 😂

We enjoyed the parkland course, staff were helpful, we hired a buggy. We struggled on occasions to know where to exit to the next hole, a few arrows giving direction could be useful.

A long and testing course. Some bunkers raked and usable, some not. Greens ok. It is time to sort out the placing of ball washers and the pictures of a view of the hole: showing ‘dog leg’ etc. All these are placed on the white/yellow tees. There is nothing on the red tees except small markers with a tiny red marking on. To use these aids means walking back to white tees. Not always easy.

The first round we had torrential rain and still enjoyed the course, the next day the sun was shining and we played even better. I personally preferred the back 9 as the fairways are a bit more forgiving.
