Just got back from a golfing weekend at the Bells Hotel and Forest of Dean Golf Club. We are a group of couples who go away regularly on golfing breaks and so it is essential that the accommodation and food is of a reasonably high standard.
Yourgolftravel (who usually arrange all of our UK trips) had recommended this venue.
A week before our departure one of our group carried out a check on “trip advisor” and was somewhat concerned about some of the comments. After he advised me I too made a check and I also shared his concern. As we had booked and paid for the break there was very little we could do but just make the best of it.
It was therefore with great relief that we could not find any evidence of the reported deficiencies as recorded in some of the trip advisors comments. In fact we found the Hotel to be extremely clean with very friendly and helpful staff. The bedrooms were all well decorated with plenty of room and comfortable beds. I would agree though that the sound proofing was not to the highest standard.
The restaurant was in the golf clubhouse some 20 metres across the car park from the front door entrance of the hotel.
For breakfast there was buffet with a selection of fruit, cereals and yoghurts, fresh fruit juice and a standard toasting machine. There was a comprehensive breakfast menu with a range of hot food ranging from Full English, through a selection of scramble eggs, poached eggs with various selection combinations to Pancakes.
All the cooked breakfasts were cooked to order so were extremely fresh and presentation was as good as any.
The evening menu had a wide range selection (see hotel web site for full menu) and all the food we had was extremely well cooked, well presented, and very enjoyable. All the vegetables were served in separate dishes and there was an overload of all of these. (On our 2 night stay we were not able to eat all of the food).
Overall the food was excellent throughout our stay with good, friendly and polite staff. Top marks for the restaurant. The club bar area had a number of separate seating areas, unfortunately, due to the weather, we were not able to make use of the very nice outside terrace, but again the staff were very efficient polite. A reasonable selection of beers and wines were available as well as bar menu which would more than matched most golf clubs. The prices in the club were very reasonable. In fact our group thought that our home golf club was generally much dearer than this venue.
The golf course was well laid out and with mostly wide fairways and reduced rough made the playing a delight. However there was a requirement for good straight hitting if a decent score was to be made. Due to the heavy rains in the days before we arrived the bunkers were not in the best of conditions, which made them somewhat difficult to play from. There were a number of very picturesque holes.
Our group handicaps range from single figure to mid 20’s and all enjoyed playing this course, and will be booking a return trip in the spring.
Overall this hotel offers a great golfing break with good
accommodation, top rate food with friendly staff, at incredible value for
