Golf Club Udine boasts an excellent 18 hole course which in recent years has benefitted from extensive renovation work which improved the layout to such an extent, that it was awarded a European Senior Tour event in 2016.
Stretching to over 7,600 yards from the back tees, Udine is certainly offers a championship test, and yet from more forward tees, higher handicapped golfers can also enjoy the challenge. No matter the tees you select, you’ll enjoy the journey as the course weaves its way through the magnificent Italian countryside.
Originally laid out as a 9 hole course in 1972 by Marco Croze, who returned some 22 years later to transform it into the 18 hole gem that awaits visiting golfers today; the course at Udine takes full advantage of its stunning location at the foothills of the Carnic Alps. Age-old oaks, wild cherry and alder trees line the fairways, and with subtle elevation changes coming into play, golfers will enjoy a relaxing yet challenging test of golf from the 1st tee to the 18th green.
Notable holes on the course include the 15th and 16th which are a par 5 and par 3 respectively. The 15th hole is one of the longest on the course and drops over a hill with the tee shot, and the approach is a fantastic risk and reward shot, with a pond on the right forcing players to think twice about whether or not to go for the green in 2, or to simply lay up and leave a short iron or a wedge into the green. The 16th hole is a tricky par 3, featuring a small green some 20m higher than tee box and really tests a player’s club selection.
Prior to their round, golfers are encouraged to use the club’s fantastic practice facilities which include a large driving range and a pitching & putting area. On the whole, Villaverde is one of Italy’s premium stay and play golf destinations.
Villaverde boasts a number of stylishly decorated accommodation options comprised of 33 aptly named Comfort Rooms, and smaller number of more spacious and luxurious Suites.
All are fully equipped with a range of modern amenities that ensure a comfortable and connected stay. Private balconies with views out over the golf course come as standard, as does free WiFi, air conditioning and an LCD TV, while Suites also boast a sizeable lounge with a sitting area and fireplace, as well as two large bathrooms, two balconies and even walk-in wardrobes. Needless to say, for golfers happy to share accommodation, these luxury rooms are simply ideal.
Villaverde Hotel & Resort also boasts excellent dining options in the form of the Privilegium Restaurant and Villaverde Bar & Restaurant. Privilegium is located in the main hotel and is the upscale option at the resort, offering diners the chance to sample fine dining and an open kitchen experience whereby guests can see expert chefs create magical dishes from scratch in front of their very eyes. Arnold Pucher is behind the “chef’s table” experience at Privilegium and was awarded Michelin stars in 2005 and 2009. With a unique talent for combining regional dishes with traditional Italian and European flavours, Arnold’s dishes hit the spot with even the most discernable foodies.
The Villaverde Bar & Restaurant, located in the golf clubhouse just 300m from the main hotel, offers a more casual dining experience that can enjoyed pre or post round, or indeed by hotel guests via a complimentary shuttle service to and from the hotel.
The hotel also boasts the the Degusto Lounge Bar, where expert bartenders are on hand to mix delicious cocktails or recommend fine wines from a collection of over 100 select local, Italian and French wines. Breakfast is served daily in Privilegium and can be enjoyed in the lounge as well.
