The Belfry – Par 4 10th Aced for the Very 1st Time

By March 13, 2012March 19th, 2012No Comments

The BelfryThere are plenty of reasons to book a stay and play golf break at The Belfry. With top class accommodation, outstanding facilities including a lavish spa and, of course, three fantastic golf courses including the world famous Brabazon, not to mention oodles of Ryder Cup history, this Midlands gem is one of the very best golf break destinations in the UK.

The mighty Brabazon Course is no doubt the highlight of any Belfry golf break, having hosted the Ryder Cup and the world’s best players on no less than four occasions; more than any other course. Who could forget Sam Torrance’s 18th hole heroics in 1985, or the jubilant Paul McGinley sinking the winning putt in 2002? These famous moments are what make the Brabazon so special, and should inspire every golfer to visit and experience that legacy. This course is also famous for a number of signature holes which include the awesome par 4 10th.

Few holes get the golfing juices flowing quite like a drivable par 4 and the 10th on the Brabazon is one of the finest in the world. Hundreds of thousands of golfers, including current superstars like Tiger Woods & Rory McIlroy, heroes of yesteryear such as Seve Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer and even us mere mortal club golfers have taken on the challenge of driving the green on this world-famous hole and, while there have been eagles and birdies galore, there was never a recorded hole in one…until now!

The exciting 10th on the Brabazon Course – The ultimate Risk vs. Reward hole?

Welsh 3-handicapper Dan O’Connor, hailing from Southerndown Golf Club on the South coast of Wales, has just become the very 1st person to complete this feat during a recent stay and play golf break at The Belfry.

Playing the Brabazon Course for the first time, the 19 year old from Maesteg decided to give it a ride and go for the green on the 10th and, right now, I would imagine he is thanking his luck stars he elected such an aggressive play! Playing from the white tees, O’Connor fired his drive straight at the green and into the cup from a little over 300 yards away!

It marks the first time any golfer has aced the 10th hole since The Brabazon course was opened in 1977. Since then, the hole has featured in 4 Ryder Cups and 11 European Tour events, and now, along with the likes of Seve, the first person to knock it onto the 10th green in one, O’Connor can add his name to The Belfry history books.

“It’s my first hole-in-one and definitely the highlight of my golfing career so far,” said the assistant at Southerndown Golf Club, Bridgend. “So many amazing players have tried to reach the 10th, but no one has actually aced it before, so it’s made the feeling even more special.”

More and more golfers like Dan are making the trip to sample this famous Ryder Cup venue as our stay & play deals have proved a big hit. Weekend UK golf breaks offer superb value for money and, for those with hectic schedules, can be a great alternative to longer golf holidays in European hotspots such as the Costa del Sol or the Algarve in Portugal.
