Great Moustaches of Golf - Movember Inspiration - 19th Hole Golf Blog by Your Golf Travel

The fairways on tour are pretty fuzzy these days and this isn’t down to any grassy growth spurts or lazy green keepers; it’s down to the players on tour sporting some impressive moustaches. If you think this is a style revolution think again as one of our great lip warmers dates back to the start of the 20^th century. So with Movember (and the fact that we have a couple of participants in the YGT office!) in mind we thought we would raise a glass to the finest moustaches in the world of golf today…

1 – Andres Gonzales

American Pro Andres Gonzales may not have reached the very top of the golfing tree yet – he plays on the Nationwide Tour – but he is the clear world number one when it comes to the battle of the brooms! You may think there must be a damn good reason to sport facial growth like Andres’ and we are happy to say there is! Gonzales’ moustache and long locks are being grown in aid of a cancer charity in the USA.

2 – Craig Stadler

If your nickname is a direct consequence of your moustache you know it should be here to stay! Stadler has been sporting his soup strainer for years and has become affectionately known as The Walrus thanks to its resemblance to Walrus tusks coupled with his…let’s say…inflated figure. Still, the former Masters champion is still going strong on the Champions Tour and we are pleased to announce that his moustache has been joined by a goatee.

3 – James Braid

James Braid is perhaps better known to many as a golf course architect than a player thanks to his numerous creations such as the King’s and Queen’s courses at Gleneagles, but the man with a considerable push broom on his upper lip won no less than 5 Open Championship titles, a record he still shares with the legendary Tom Watson.

4 – Mike “Fluff” Cowan

It seems only fair that a man with “Fluff” in his name should appear on this list so it’s just as well that one of the most recognisable caddies in the game of golf also happens to sport a serious set of whiskers. Having caddied for some of the game’s leading names, including for Tiger when he won at Augusta by a mammoth 12 shots, Fluff has been around long enough to achieve a state of facial-hair-growthery that few men will ever achieve!

5 – Miguel Angel Jimenez

Everyone’s favourite European Tour players now sports a soul patch to go along with his tache but in his early days on tour Miguel Angel Jimenez was flying the flag for Spanish mouth slugs with great style. Couple the moustache with love for brandy and cigars, as well as a rather jaunty swing and you have the recipe for one of the most popular players on tour today.

6 – Sam Torrance

European Ryder Cup legend and winning Ryder Cup captain, Sam Torrance, has been sporting a nose neighbour for years and it was at the height of its powers when it rolled in the winning putt on the 18^th hole at The Belfry during the 1985 Ryder Cup. Like his good friend Mark James, who also makes the list by the way, Torrance still sports his tache today.

7 – Gary Mccord

Mccord was once a PGA Tour player but his best finishes were a pair of runner up spots which saw him turn his hand to golf commentary for CBS. Known for his for his outspokenness, a trait that has seen him barred from the CBS commentary team for The Masters, the American is also well known for his rather stylish cookie duster which, like any self respecting moustache wearer should, he styles so that the tips are flicked up and around.

8 – Corey Pavin

Unlike Mark James and Sam Torrance, Corey Pavin’s upper lip has went bald as he aged but he sported one of the finest taches in the game back in his heyday when he was winning US Opens and playing starring roles in Ryder Cups, including the infamous war on the Shore at Kiawah Island in 1991.

9 – John Daly

Long John Daly no longer sports his lip insulation but back at the start of the 90s he had both a moustache and a mullet; quite a combination! Turning up at Crooked Stick after driving all through the night to get there – Daly was called up as the 9^th reserve after others had pulled out of the tournament – Daly rocked his moustache in style, bombing his way to his first major championship with this US PGA win.

10 – Johnson Wagner

Little known Johnson Wagner thought he had discovered the secret power of the tache during the early months of the 2012 PGA Tour season. Having commenced the growing of his lip tickler to simply annoy his wife, Wagner then went on to win twice in quick succession which has led him to sport the thing permanently.
