Macmillan Cancer Support is offering free tee times at some of the best Scottish golf courses for players brave enough to participate in a 72-hole one-day charity challenge.

The charity is seeking teams to play four rounds of golf in a single day, encompassing around 300 shots and walking 20-miles as part of the charity event, called the Longest Day Golf Challenge.

In 2009 a similar event raised over £360,000 as some 319 teams took part in the challenge to raise funds to help cancer sufferers and their families come to terms with and live with cancer; this year the charity has managed to get golf courses to offer participant teams free tee times to help encourage more teams to take part.

Macmillan’s director in Scotland, Elspeth Atkinson, said: “We have been very lucky that so many prestigious golf courses have given us free tee times for those taking on the very tough Longest Day Golf challenge.

“We hope the generosity of the clubs will encourage even more golfers to take part in this event.
“It’s certainly not going to be an easy challenge, but for people who really love golf there can’t be many better ways to raise money for charity.”

The challenge runs until August for teams of three or four golfers and Macmillan is urging anyone interested in taking on the challenge and raising funds for charity to get in touch for further details of the challenge and the courses taking part in the free tee times offer.

Macmillan are also offering the four highest scoring teams – the challenge is in Stableford format – and who raises the most money the chance to play for the Longest Day Golf trophy at the prestigious Boavista Golf Resort in Lagos, Portugal.
