Malmo Golf Holiday Review
Our annual excursion in search of culture, food and drink, and the opportunity to compete for the world famous TCF trophy took us to Malmo, Sweden in late May. On paper, the location ticked those essential boxes; geographically convenient, quality courses within easy reach of our base, a fine array of restaurants and hostelries, and good scenery.
We were not disappointed; after a short hop from London to Copenhagen, we picked up a couple of hire cars, and soon we were crossing that wonderful piece of modern engineering joining Denmark and Sweden, the Øresund Bridge. 45 minutes later, we were at Barseback Golf Club, or least those of us who followed the well signed route and not a misfiring sat nav were. The others caught up, and before long we were teeing off on the Donald Steel Course, a largely parkland course, but one with a smattering of water. After an enjoyable round, and a stop at the 19th, it was a quick 30 minute journey into Malmo, and to the well appointed Hotel Rica. When we say well appointed, what more could you ask for; a happening bar next door, and the heart of Malmo’s nightlife a minute away. For some, this meant party time, others chose to get a good night’s sleep ahead of the following day’s rounds at two of Sweden’s best golf courses, Falsterbo and Ljunghusens. Both are located at the south-western tip of Sweden, and both are links courses, more so the former. Both a mere 30 minutes from Malmo, with Falsterbo offering an excellent lunch. After another enjoyable evening sampling cuisine typical of the region, it was onto our final day’s golf, a round on each of Bokskogen’s two courses, imaginatively named Old & New!!. Again these we were 30 minutes from Malmo, but this time inland parkland courses, and a hard act to follow after the previous day. The Bandit won the trophy (again), and after another night out on the town, it was time to head back to Denmark, and the flight back to London.
Would we recommend Malmo to others? Absolutely; the courses are quality, there is plenty of nightlife, and it was all very convenient. Drawbacks? You have to accept that Sweden is not the cheapest country in the EC, and woe betide you if you park your car facing the wrong, but overall it was top notch.
