San Lorenzo Course

San Lorenzo has long been considered by many people to be Portugal's finest course, and is firmly established in the upper echelons of European golf. The course opened in 1988, and was designed by the American architect Joseph Lee.

The fortunate creator was blessed with an unimaginably beautiful blank canvas as San Lorenzo sits in the Ria Formosa nature reserve, a vast park which is home to terrific plant and wildlife species. There are many different styles of golf at San Lorenzo, as you wind through the terrific pines, lakes, and private villas, while the course also works its way out to the coastline.

There are countless spectacular holes, like the third, a par-5 towards the ocean which gets the juices flowing, before the course builds up to a magnificent crescendo with the closing stretch; the 17th is a daunting test, while the closing hole is a the classic ‘risk/reward' hole, where the intrepid golfer must strike a good approach shot to reach the spectacular semi-island green.

San Lorenzo's considerable reputation is not for nothing - this terrific course will not disappoint should you visit during your next golf holiday in the Algarve.

Hotel Information

The 5* Dona Filipa hotel is situated on the fringes of the Vale do Lobo estate, on the edge of the golden sandy beach of the Algarve coastline. Dona Filipa has long been regarded as one of the area's best 5* hotels, offering luxury accommodation for many regular visitors to the area for golf and leisure holidays.

There are 154 guest rooms in total, which are stylishly decorated and appointed elegantly in a traditional Portuguese fashion. The warm earth tones are complemented by the natural light of the charming bedrooms, which are equipped with satellite television, full air-conditioning, safe deposit box and mini-bar.

With the famous sand of the Algarve shoreline just yards away, this outstanding 5* hotel is a phenomenal destination for a luxury golf holiday in Portugal.

The Dona Filipa hotel has 3 floodlit tennis courts and a resident instructor, a heated swimming pool, children's splash pool, sports facilities, and dedicated programmes for the kids. The area is also rich in activities - you can try a fantastic range of water sports, while the local waters are a favourite for avid deep sea fishermen.

In Vilamoura, head to Casa del Forno for Italian food, or the Ostra d'Ouro Grill at the Marina for sublime seafood.

The Primavera Restaurant serves a great buffet restaurant, then lovely Italian a la carte menus for lunch and dinner.

The Duarte Grill is a sumptuous fine dining room, whose international cuisine is renowned for its flavour and beauty.

The San Lorenzo Bar is a great golfer's watering hole, while the Atlantic Club is a refined port and cigar establishment.

We had a lovely time in the Algarve and our golf holiday went very smoothly.

We played five courses over the five days and all the courses were very nice indeed. The consensus is that San Lorenzo is the best of the five but my favourite is the Vale the Lobo Royal. Vale de Lobo Ocean is also a very nice course. Eight people played golf on our tour this year and it was our 16th golf tour in as many years. The weather, as usual, was glorious. We did have a thunderstorm on the Wednesday morning but it made everything on the courses fresher!

We were given a good welcome at all the courses and the staff were very helpful. Club sandwiches were great! The facilities at all the clubs we visited were very good and all of the golf courses were well maintained.

We did feel the La Quinta North is suffering a little from age and was not quite as well maintained as the other courses. Having said that, it is still a lovely course to play.

We stayed at the Dona Filipa Hotel and it was excellent. The breakfast is very good and they serve the best omelettes we have ever had! The facilities are also top notch. We would recommend this resort to anyone going on a golf tour of Portugal.

I think the Algarve is one of the best golf holiday destinations as it is essentially just a huge golf resort! It seems to be less busy now as well which is nice. Perhaps that has something to do with the financial downturn.

We will be returning there next year and will certainly be booking with Your Golf Travel again. The value for money you get with YGT golf holiday packages is brilliant. In the meantime we will savour the good memories of our 2011 golf trip to the Algarve.

Thanks for organising our golf holidays to Dona Filipa and San Lorenzo. San Lorenzo is basically just a fantastic golf course with 18 great and very different holes and greens that you could play snooker on they are that smooth (and quick).
The distance from the hotel took us a little by surprise (5 minutes away) though the shuttle buses were reliable and the staff were very accommodating. The hotel offered great quality and the food was excellent - only downside being the price of drinks (same as at the golf course) with soft drinks in particular being very pricey for what they were.
The arrangement I have to say were first class right from phoning with my initial enquiry. Everything was done with such efficiency and all our needs taken care of including the airport / hotel transfers which couldn't have gone more smoothly (and was the part I was dreading not knowing the area at all).
I would score a 9.5 out of ten - the price of drinks Euro 3.5,for a can of Coke, snacks Mars bar (small) Euro 1.5 and range balls 24 balls for Euro 4.0 just took the edge off what was a great break and yes I will definitely use Your Golf Travel again

We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday to Dona Filipa & San Lorenzo Golf Resort. The Dona Filipa was still as good as we have come to expect and the course was in good condition as usual (the greens were a little slower). This along with great meals out made for a great holiday.

The staff at both the hotel and club were mostly still the same, so it is like home from home. I believe that the owner is considering selling the course to an English person who owns golf courses. It will be interesting to see what happens.
