Abergele Golf Club

Abergele Golf Club is one of North Wales' most enjoyable parkland courses, with Gwrych Castle providing a backdrop you will remember long after the final putt. Founded in 1910 and based at its current site since the 1960s, the club combines a scenic setting with a course that is fair, varied and strong enough to hold its place on any North Wales golf tour.

For groups looking to add variety to a regional itinerary, Abergele makes a lot of sense. The layout has enough bite to keep good players interested, the views add something different to the day and the clubhouse gives you the relaxed, welcoming finish you want after 18 holes. Stand on the 17th and you can pick out the distant lights of Blackpool Pleasure Beach across the water. On a clear day, the Isle of Man sits on the horizon some 70 miles away. Not many parkland courses in Wales can offer that.

For groups planning a North Wales tour, Abergele is an excellent change of pace. You get a scenic, well-kept parkland test that balances nicely against the region's bigger coastal names, plus a friendly clubhouse that works well for societies, away days and mixed-ability groups. The pro shop is particularly well stocked, with all the major brands represented, and the clubhouse balcony is a real bonus after the round, especially on a clear afternoon.

Who is this for?
Golfers building a North Wales golf tour who want quality parkland golf with a memorable setting and a friendly, welcoming club atmosphere. Societies and away-day groups will find Abergele an easy, well-organised venue to visit.

Who is it best for?
Players of all abilities who enjoy a course that rewards good course management and straight thinking. It works particularly well for mixed-ability groups, where lower handicappers get a proper test and higher handicappers can enjoy the round without feeling overmatched.

Abergele Golf Course

Abergele Golf Club gives you one of the most memorable backdrops in North Wales. With Gwrych Castle looking down over the course and coastal views opening up across the back nine, this is a round that stands out from the first tee.

Abergele is long enough to test better players without becoming a slog for the rest of the group. The fairways are inviting in places, but the shape of the holes and the coastal breeze keep you thinking throughout. That makes it a strong fit for mixed groups, where lower handicappers still get a challenge and higher handicappers can enjoy the course without feeling overmatched.

Each of the 18 holes carries a name, many of them in Welsh, which gives the round a distinct sense of place. Y Ffos opens proceedings, The Paddock and Crud-Y-Castell follow, and the course begins to show its character early. The par-5 8th, Road Hole, is the standout test of length at 580 yards. It demands a precise approach if you are to give yourself any kind of birdie chance, and it plays every yard.

The back nine tightens things up. Holes like Devil's Elbow and Dog Leg do exactly what their names suggest, and the prevailing wind off the North Wales coast tends to make itself felt on the more exposed stretches. The recently redesigned greens are a real highlight throughout, smooth and true, with enough contour to demand careful reading and a committed stroke.

The 18th, Cartref, meaning home in Welsh, is the signature hole. You walk up the final fairway with the clubhouse ahead of you, the balcony often lined with members watching the action. With the clubhouse in view, the 18th gives you a proper closing test. It is a finishing hole you remember and one that makes you want to come back and play it better.

For groups on a North Wales tour, Abergele sits within easy reach of the coast and pairs well with the bigger championship names in the region. It offers something different in terms of setting and character, without asking you to compromise on course quality.

Clubhouse & Facilities

The clubhouse at Abergele feels lived in, in the best possible sense. It has the warmth of a club that has been welcoming visitors for well over a century, without any of the stuffiness that sometimes comes with that history. The main lounge looks out over the course and towards the castle, and the balcony is the social heart of the place on any decent afternoon.

The back bar adds another dimension to the post-round experience, with two snooker tables, a coffee machine and a large television showing sport. It is the sort of space where a quick drink after golf has a habit of turning into something considerably longer. For societies and group visits, the clubhouse is set up to handle you well, with enough room and atmosphere to make the post-round debrief a proper part of the day.

Abergele invests seriously in the game beyond the 18 holes. The pro shop, run by Head Fellow PGA Professional Stuart Runcie, is particularly well stocked, carrying all the major brands including Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, FootJoy and Galvin Green. Stuart holds Titleist Brand Ambassador status, and the custom fitting operation is built around Trackman 4 technology, an indoor studio with a simulator and a Huxley putting green.

Practice facilities are available on site, and electric trolleys are available for hire from the pro shop for those who want to save their legs on the longer holes.

Abergele Golf Club is a course that rewards golfers who look beyond the obvious names on a North Wales itinerary. It sits in one of the most visually striking settings in Welsh golf, with Gwrych Castle overhead and the Irish Sea in the distance, and it backs that up with a parkland layout that is fair, well-maintained and enjoyable to play at any level. The recently redesigned greens have raised the quality of the test, the clubhouse is warm and well set up for groups, and the pro shop and coaching operation are among the strongest in the region.

For societies, away days and groups building a multi-course North Wales break, Abergele is a smart inclusion. It offers something different in character and setting, it handles visitors well and it sits comfortably alongside the bigger coastal names in the region without being overshadowed by them. Whether you are visiting for a single round or slotting it into a longer itinerary, it is a course worth making time for.
