The coastline to the north of Launceston is a wild and unkempt landscape, whose towering dunes are set the stage for Barnbougle's astonishing links.

Tom Doak, the man presented with the remarkable landscapes at Kauri Cliffs and Kidnappers Cave, teamed up with Michael Clayton to formulate a layout that would be worthy of the amazing dunes.
Some of the sandhills can reach a staggering 100 feet tall, offering up a superb canvas for a seaside course. Little has been changed at Barnbougle, as the landscape is bursting with character as it is, but there is no doubt that the links land is home to a golf course of astounding quality.
