For championship golf around Newcastle, Close House is an outstanding option thanks largely to its two terrific courses - the Filly and Colt.
Originally built in the mid-1960s as a nine-hole layout for the city's main university, the Filly is the course on which Close House built its reputation. Extensive renovation and improvements have resulted in a challenging yet not daunting par-70 track that is little over 6,000 yards, but that is hugely enjoyable. USGA construction standard greens ensure superb conditioning, while their slopes and swales place a premium on putting.
Spread out across a splendid parcel of land close to the site of Hadrian's Wall and the banks of the River Tyne, the new Colt course looks set to be a gem. When construction work began on the eagerly anticipated layout in 2004, the design process saw the team draw inspiration from the great Harry S. Colt, esteemed course architect to the likes of Swinley Forest and Sunningdale. The resultant Colt championship course at Close House is a subtle and immensely challenging one that will undoubtedly develop into one of the region's finest.
