Dromoland Castle

A €5 million investment programme completed in 2004 by the late Irish golf legend J.B. Carr and architect Ron Kirby helped cement Dromoland Castle as one of the greatest parkland courses in Ireland. Set in the heart of rolling Co. Clare, it's a proper estate course, mature woodland, immaculate presentation and that unmistakable "castle in the background" feel from the first tee onwards.

The layout winds through 450 acres of woodland and parkland, with water coming into play on several holes. The headline moment is the par-3 14th, a shot over the lake to a green framed by the castle itself. It's a photo hole, but it's not just for show. This is a parkland test that asks you to shape it both ways and keep it in play off the tee.

If you like plotting your way around, you'll enjoy it here. Miss the fairways and you'll be scrambling, but play from the right side and there are real birdie chances on the shorter par 4s and the more attackable par 5s. Conditions are typically strong for an Irish inland course, with greens that roll well when the weather is on your side.

For many golfers, the real appeal is the full experience, championship golf, five-star castle accommodation and plenty to do off the course, all in one place.

Who is this for?
Golfers who want a scenic parkland challenge with a proper five-star base, plus couples and groups who like the idea of great golf, a spa and estate activities all in one spot.

Who is it best for?
Players who enjoy plotting their way round and keeping it in play off the tee, and anyone booking a celebration trip where the hotel matters as much as the course.

Dromoland Castle

Given the incredible natural landscape of the estate, it was obvious for Kirby to make use of the indigenous features as hazards. As such, the River Rine, and the numerous lakes, marshes and woodland are all obstacles that visiting golfers must negotiate.

For those familiar with Irish golf, Carr and Kirby are also responsible for the awesome Old Head at Kinsale, so it should come as no surprise that since its redevelopment, Dromoland has been elevated into the exclusive group of ‘must play' courses in the country.

With all this on the site of one of the most luxurious estates around, there are few better choices for a fantastic golf break in Ireland.

The newly-established Dromoland Castle Golf Academy is superbly-equipped. During the summer, a large real-grass range is available to test out the conditions as you will find them on the fairways.

Accommodation at Dromoland Castle

Dromoland Castle's story stretches back to Gaelic Irish families of royal blood and you feel that heritage the moment you walk in. The public rooms are all period character, while the bedrooms blend classic styling with modern comfort. Rooms range from Classic options in the original castle through to larger suites, many with views over the estate grounds, gardens or the golf course.

Off the course, you can turn it into a full-on leisure break. The spa, relocated from the original Country Club, includes six treatment rooms plus a 17-metre pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi in the fitness area. There's plenty across the estate too, fishing on the lakes, archery, horse riding, walks, cycling and boating, with the concierge able to point you in the right direction.

Dinner at the Earl of Thormond Restaurant is the classic "castle night" experience, with a harpist on selected evenings and a menu built around quality Irish ingredients. There's also a full-time sommelier and a serious cellar beneath the castle if you fancy letting someone else choose the bottle. For something more relaxed after your round, the Fig Tree restaurant in the golf clubhouse serves breakfast, lunch and early evening meals, with terrace seating overlooking the 18th green when the weather plays along. It's the kind of place where staff remember your name and nothing feels rushed, proper country-house hospitality without the stuffiness.

Great setting and a beautiful course. All staff are incredibly helpful and friendly. Would like to have another go round, and personally would get a buggy, especially if it’s hot, or if you’re playing multiple consecutive courses.

An interesting golf course with good relief and water hazards. The proshop staff were very freindly. The course was not very busy so we were able to get around quite quickly. Second time we have played it and I would highly recommend it.

Probably the best parkland course I've played - up there with Sunningdale Old but less of the heritage perhaps. If this course was in England, it'd be top 20 easily so don't miss this one of you get a chance - greens were at least 9.5/10 and it was quiet too so 3.5hrs for a 3 ball!
