Schloss Roxburghe Hotel & Golf Course

Excellent See all 95 reviews

Set in the Scottish Borders, SCHLOSS Roxburghe is the kind of country estate that works just as well for a golf society as it does for a couple sneaking away for a spa-first weekend. The property was once owned by the Duke of Roxburghe and, after a major refurbishment, it now feels like a complete destination rather than simply a hotel next to a course. Recent investment added 58 new rooms, luxury self-catering cottages and expanded the dining options, plus a spa with a heated outdoor infinity pool looking out over the grounds.

There are 78 rooms and suites across the historic house and the newer wing, with options like balconies, fireplaces and four-poster beds depending on what you fancy. After your round you've got plenty of places to settle in, especially the lounges with open fires, and the dining is strong enough that you can happily stay on site all weekend. Afternoon tea in the drawing room is a must, Charlie's is ideal for a relaxed three-course dinner and Bar 1745 is your go-to for a good whisky. If you want to make an evening of it, Sunlaws offers a more refined experience built around top Scottish produce.

Away from the parkland golf course, there's loads to do, including clay pigeon shooting, archery, falconry and fishing for trout or salmon on the River Teviot. In summer, croquet on the lawn is a great shout for non-golfers or a rest afternoon.

Who is this for?
Golf groups who want a high-end UK break with something to do after 18 holes, plus couples who like the idea of golf mixed with a proper spa and great food.

Who is it best for?
Mixed-ability groups, mid-handicappers and anyone planning a 2 to 4 night stay where not everybody wants to play every day.

Roxburghe Golf Course

With the River Teviot flowing alongside, this picturesque track also has some teeth; at over 7,000 yards it is a course that is well-suited to those who hit the ball long and high, and also challenges visitors with Thomas' characteristically deep bunkers.

The course is relatively young, but has already entered the top 100 rankings in the United Kingdom, thanks to holes like number 14, ‘The Viaduct'. With an elevated tee perched high above the beautifully-mown fairway, this must surely be one of Scotland's most beautiful holes. The spectacular viaduct traverses the Teviot in the near distance, while the river hugs the left side, posing a genuine challenge to the intrepid golfer.

Ryder Cup hero Sam Torrance is a known fan of the Roxburghe, while Colin Montgomerie, Nick Faldo, and course record holder Sergio Garcia have also visited in recent times, so why not follow in the footsteps of the great?

The estate's soil is so bountiful that the head chef grows much of his own produce in the restaurant's garden.

Accommodation at Schloss Roxburghe Hotel & Golf Course

The accommodation at SCHLOSS Roxburghe splits into three distinct options, each with its own appeal. The main historic house holds 20 individually designed rooms and suites where you'll find grand fireplaces, four-poster beds and estate views framed by tall windows. It's traditional Scottish country house style done properly, with modern comfort layered in where it counts. The rooms vary in size and character, so if you're after something specific, like a view over the grounds or a particularly spacious suite, it's worth mentioning when you book.

The new wing adds 58 contemporary rooms and suites, some with private balconies. The design here is cleaner and more modern, which suits golfers who prefer a simpler aesthetic after a day on the course. The rooms are well equipped, the beds are comfortable and everything feels fresh. If you're travelling as a group or want more space and independence, the self-catering cottages give you a private base while still letting you access all the hotel's facilities and services. The cottages work particularly well for longer stays or if you've got a mix of golfers and non-golfers who want their own space in the evenings.

Food & Drink

Dining at SCHLOSS Roxburghe covers every mood and occasion. Bar 1745 is the place for a post-round drink, with a strong Scottish whisky selection and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer than planned. Charlie's restaurant focuses on Scottish dishes built around local ingredients, and it's the kind of place where you can relax over three courses without feeling rushed. Sunlaws takes things up a level with a gastronomic tasting menu that uses premium produce and contemporary techniques. If you're celebrating something or just fancy treating yourself, it's worth booking ahead. For something lighter, the Spike Bar serves breakfast rolls, salads and sandwiches, which is ideal if you're heading straight back out to play.

Leisure Facilities

The spa is a genuine retreat, with treatment rooms, a sauna and that outdoor heated infinity pool. Even on a colder day, the heated outdoor pool is a brilliant reset after 18 holes. For non-golfers or rest days, the estate's country pursuits are a major draw. Clay pigeon shooting and archery test your aim in a different way, falconry gives you a chance to work with birds of prey, and salmon fishing on the River Teviot is a properly slow-paced afternoon if you fancy a break from the course.

The room was very comfortable with all amenities overlooking the gardens. Staff were all very welcoming, polite and friendly and we're pleased to help. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds right next to the golf course and the spa was luxurious. I'll definitely be taking my wife there for a trip. Special thanks to the barmaid in the whisky and gin bar for a memorable evening.

Top quality golf course. Big fairways, big bunkers big greens. It felt like a proper golf course. I'd been waiting to play Roxburghe for many years - I wasn't disappointed and will be back soon.

We went in December and understandably the course was very wet and muddy/boggy in places. For the time of year it was in very good condition.

A Truly Incredible Golfing Experience An incredible course from start to finish! The layout was both beautiful and challenging, especially with the strategic placement of the bunkers that really tested our game. The greens were in top-notch condition—smooth, fast, and well-maintained. We used a buggy throughout the round, which made the experience even more enjoyable and comfortable. Having played this course in the past, I can confidently say it continues to impress. It was an unforgettable experience, and I’d highly recommend it to any golf enthusiast looking for a serious challenge in a stunning setting.

The course had recently overcome some issues with the watering system which led to the less than perfect condition. Otherwise a good course.
