Historically, golf has been played on the site since 1910, but the course as it is now was established in 1951. Though shorter than many of its neighbours, including sister course Lochgreen, Darley is exceptionally tight and unforgiving, with banks of heather and gorse lining the narrow landing strips.

It has been asserted that Darley is the fourth hardest course in Scotland at which to play to your handicap, with the emphasis placed on accuracy, patience and strategy. Faced with this proposition in a stiff wind, it is easy to understand why.
