Although barely developed as a golfing destination, the courses at Donnafugata prove that Sicily has all the potential to become one of the most attractive spots in Europe for lovers of the Auld Game.

Natural beauty, excellent weather, memorable vistas and great food mean Sicily actually has few equals in the Mediterranean region, and Donnafugata exploits all these qualities to the full, easily standing comparison with the growing number of excellent courses on the island, including the stand-out layouts at Il Picchio and Le Madonie.

The Links course at the 36-hole resort was designed by Italian architect Franco Piras, while the other is a Gary Player project. Both courses are close to the Mediterranean Sea and the historic Donnafugata Castle. The terrain of both the South and North courses is gently undulating, but the two courses are very different from each other in character. Player's South course is parkland in style with carob and olive trees that are common in this part of Sicily, as well as old handmade dry stone walls. The Links course, meanwhile, has very few trees and enjoys several panoramic views towards the sea.

If you need to improve your scores, there's a superb golf academy with up-to-date teaching facilities as well as plenty of space to practice your driving, putting and pitching.

Accommodation

The Donnafugata Golf Resort and Spa is situated on the sprawling Donnafugata Manor, close to Ragusa, Sicily, and under an hour from Sicily's main international airport.  This discreet resort's elegant, low level buildings blend seamlessly into the Mediterranean landscape and are a model of historic preservation, with original details remaining intact through recent renovations and upgrades.

Set amid pristine beaches and historic conservation areas, the resort offers superb opportunities for sightseeing trips. Many of the neighbouring towns such as Ragusa, Modica, Ibla, Noto and Scicli are part of the UNESCO world heritage programme and remain beautifully preserved in the Sicilian Baroque style.

Donnafugata Golf Resort and Spa, as you might expect of a five-star facility, has just about every amenity you could wish for, with three restaurants, two bars, state-of-the-art fitness centre, swimming pool, hydro massage, Turkish bath and a full menu of spa treatments.

The spacious rooms are comprehensively equipped, and even standard rooms kitted out with wireless internet access, satellite TV, a personal safe, minibar and a personal refreshment centre.

Dining-wise, Il Carrubo restaurant is a real highlight with floor-to-ceiling windows provide stunning views of the surrounding golf course and gardens and a menu that blends tradition and innovation, using classic Sicilian dishes with locally sourced ingredients as the basis for its culinary creations.

With a signature course designed by Gary Player and an 18-hole championship course by Franco Piras right on the doorstep, it's hard to imagine finding a better location for a golfing break in the Mediterranean region.

Golfer reviews

There are 2 top rate but very different courses at Donnafugata...

A party of 7 golfers from Lindrick Golf Club went for a week to Donnafugata and had a really excellent time. We have been to many golf resorts over the years and this was one of the very best. Your Golf Travel did a great job organising the trip and patience was shown with several changes we had to make. Eventually everything went like clockwork.

The hotel was excellent, with really nice rooms and a super spa. The poolside restaurant and bar were very good and staff excellent. Lunch seemed to be about 20 euros each but that included beer, wine, food and coffee.

Breakfast was superb, with a wide choice of hot and cold food and lots of fruit and good coffee to get you going. Dinner in the restaurant was disappointing. The restaurant is most attractive and the service good, but the food was uninspiring and quite pricey.

There are 2 top rate but very different courses at Donnafugata, both of which are well maintained and provide plenty of challenge. We were in the 11-14 handicap range and though the fairways are generous, the rough is severe so you need plenty of ammunition! Most levels of golfers would like the courses and if you are having a bad day the views are great. The only problem is the bunkers are short of sand and hope they will rectify that soon.

We like to start at about 11am and then stop for a good lunch and restart at about 3pm and the hotel obliged us every day. It's the best form of holiday golf!

Airport pick up was prompt and comfortable in a spacious bus to the resort. The return journey was a little quicker as I think the driver fancied himself for Monza.

As I say the evening meals were not great so we managed to acquire an excellent local taxi driver, who recommended several local restaurants which were very authentic and inexpensive, with the best pasta ever.

His name is Giorgio of Trinacria Viaggi and he also took us out on a fascinating day tour of the area, including showing us where Montalbano was filmed. Thoroughly recommended!

All in all we had a great trip and I would be very happy to recommend Donnafugata to anybody looking for a more interesting and different golf holiday from the norm. Overall I’d give the trip about 9 out of 10.

The Donnafugata hotel was very good...

The Donnafugata hotel was very good and comfortable. The rooms were spacious and bathrooms well laid out. The showers were especially good. Beds were king size plus and very comfortable and there were patios available for outside relaxation.

Both golf courses were good and in a strong breeze, the Links Course was especially challenging. The Parkland Course was a good layout and generally it was enjoyed more by our group. The condition of both golf courses was generally good though some sprinkler water had run down into some bunkers making the condition of these quite variable.

Staff members in the hotel and the pro shop were attentive and helpful.

We ate at the wine bar, spike bar and main restaurant and while the latter was very smart, it was probably a bit over priced. The others were considered good value though, but of course had fairly limited menus.

We hired cars and were able therefore to do some sightseeing within one hour drive of the resort (Raviso, Scicla, Caltagirone) as well as going to some good restaurants in Punta Secha, Comiso, Scoglitti and Marina de Raviso.

Overall an enjoyable trip and would recommend to others.

Everything about Donnafugata Golf Resort is 5 star...

We all had a great time on our golf holiday to Donnafugata. I think everything about Donnafugata Golf Resort is 5 star; what a magnificent setup!

I can't fault anything about the place. The accommodation and service was excellent, with very friendly staff and we also found the quality of the food to be very good indeed, and, for the high standard and service, surprisingly very well priced.

We also had a couple of nights dining out in Ragusa and, again, we were very pleasantly surprised at the standard and prices.

Regarding the golf at Donnafugata, both courses were in great condition and were thoroughly enjoyed by all. Golf buggies at 45 euros were a bit pricey but that does seem to be the going rate these days wherever you go. Having said that, I have to say your price for the whole package was wonderful value for money.

I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this venue, and thank you for your excellent service.
