After a multi million pound refurbishment during 2011 Five Lakes re-opened it’s doors as Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester – Five Lakes, the first Crowne Plaza Resort Hotel in the UK. The resort features two superb golf courses, set in 320…
The Lakes is the feature course at Five Lakes, and is a regular host to an annual regional PGA event, in addition to being selected for the prestigious Nick Faldo Challenge. The layout was conceived by European Tour legend Neil Coles, who has created the perfect resort course which is guaranteed to be an enjoyable experience for all golfers.
There are however numerous hazards to test even the best players, particularly the abundant water which guards no less than 10 holes. From the championship tees, the Lakes measures 6,751 yards, and is one of the golfing highlights of the region.
The monster 6th, at 564 yards, is one of the most daunting tests on the Lakes. Make sure of your yardage to ensure you avoid the treacherous stream that bisects the fairway.
The Links is slightly shorter than the Lakes Course, and is the perfect complement. The Links is undoubtedly an easier proposition than its neighbour, but should certainly not be underestimated, as there are still a number of strategically positioned water hazards and penal sand traps.
Should you manage to avoid these obstacles, scoring well should be guaranteed as the slick greens, which the course is famous for, make putting a real pleasure. The Links only serves to underline Five Lakes' reputation as one of the East's best golf resorts.
The 194-bedroom hotel at the resort is the complete modern package. With unrivalled sports and leisure facilities on-site, the hotel is equipped to ensure the maximum comfort of its visitors.
The guest rooms are comprised of Standard rooms, Club rooms and Suites in the main hotel building as well as 80 bedrooms in the Village Complex, adjacent to the main hotel. The spacious and light Village rooms with great views over the courses tend to be particularly popular with golf groups. The modern façade is reflected inside, where all guest rooms have been refurbished and feature the latest facilities including plasma screen TVs, wireless internet access and air conditioning.
In the Country Club at Five Lakes, guests will find a complex equipped with facilities to rival any in the region. Inside are a superb swimming pool, steam room, whirlpool bath and sauna, in addition to the state-of-the-art gym and aerobics studio. Five Lakes is also a mecca for lovers of racket sports, with indoor and outdoor tennis, squash and badminton courts available throughout the year. In the superb spa, Clarins and ESPA products are utilised to enhance the countless health and beauty treatments available in this therapeutic sanctuary.
Brasserie1 is the main restaurant serving contemporary international cuisine with a distinctive British accent. Alternatively you can upgrade to the specialist seafood restaurant, Catch 22, serving a range of locally sourced, fresh seafood.
Bar Lacu is the perfect evening retreat and stays open till late for a beers, wine, cocktails and light meals. There’s also the Sports Bar where you’ll find a relaxed and welcoming environment for a post-golf beer.

Thank you for booking and organising this splendid weekend at Five Lakes. Both golf courses were brilliant and we were very well received by the Golf Pro. He was very friendly and helpful, especially when it came to juggling buggies about to ensure we had one for our final round on Sunday.
The ladies went into Colchester shopping on Saturday. The Spa facilities were first class, rivalling our local “Ballentines” gym”.
The accommodation and all other facilities could not be faulted. Once again thank you very much.
Would we go there again. Most probably. Would we recommend to others. Definitely. Would we use you guys again. Most certainly and look forward to dealing with you again in the future. Kind regards.
I just wanted to drop you a note to say a big thank you to all the team at yourgolf travel for arranging our 3 day trip to Five Lakes. The venue is first class and true value for money. Thanks again,
Some feedback on our golf trip to Five Lakes, Essex last weekend. We all found both the courses to be very good and challenging for all of us even the low handicappers. The hotel was excellent – great rooms, first class facilities and the menu was very good with the self service / all you can eat approach. We certainly would recommend both yourselves and the hotel / golf to friends (with the warning about the bar prices). Hope to be speaking with you again soon, thanks,
Our golf break at the Five Lakes resort was enjoyable in every way from start to finish and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend either the venue or Your Golf Travel. Your service was exemplary and we felt like we were looked after very well. This helps to put people at ease throughout a golf holiday so top marks for that!
The hotel was easy to find and we were welcomed warmly and offered wine or soft drinks which we thought was a really nice touch. The hotel was being refurbished but the staff did everything possible to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Our room was quite lovely and it had everything one needs on a golf trip. The beds were huge and extremely comfortable and in general the room was clean and maintained to a good standard. All of the food we sampled was of a high standard but unfortunately the staff in the restaurant were a bit on the slow side!
I’m told both of the golf courses were splendid and in fantastic condition and all of the staff involved with the golf club were helpful and friendly. In fact my husband hasn’t stopped talking about the courses since so they must have made a good impression!
The spa was really nice and my husband also enjoyed it after his rounds of golf. He said it was the perfect place to relax after a round.
All in all we had a great time and we would go there again.
We had a good golf break. The rough was brutal but the weather made up for that.
We had one slight Hiccup with the Bar not knowing of our rolling lunch but we sorted that.
Rooms Fantastic!!
We all had a really good time at Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester – Five Lakes.
Here's a brief rundown of our time there.
Check-in was efficient and we were all able to check in early into our upgraded Village rooms. The Professional was ok, but there was a lack of golf gear in his shop. Some clothing but hardly any clubs. Not much in the way of snacks choc etc as there is no halfway hut. The facilities for other Sports in the hotel are very good, but I think they miss an opportunity to up-sell these to their guests.
Changing rooms were a bit scruffy, lots of used towels left around. Evening meals and breakfast were good in the Hotel, but a bit busy.
Golf courses have a great layout but suffered from a bit of TLC. Which is often the case and Hotel/courses vs Members courses. Greens putted well, but there was no definition of fairways from semi rough and again around the greens. It all blended into one another. This applied to both courses.
But overall, we had a really enjoyable stay. Thanks again to YGT for the offers they gave us, and we will book again.
