While the French Alps may not immediately stand out as a golfing destination, there are a number of terrific resorts which boast internationally recognised courses. Add to this the unrivalled scenery, the rich gastronomic heritage, and the multitude of outdoor activities and pursuits on offer, and it is clear that the Alpine region’s flexibility and diversity are key factors in its recent emergence as a golf and leisure holiday hot spot.
Within a relatively short drive you can experience the low-lying centres like Lyon, Grenoble and the Rhone Valley, before ascending towards Lake Geneva and the snow-capped peaks, all overlooked by the towering Mont Blanc. Golf courses of considerable repute can be found at the Evian Resort (host to the LPGA Tour’s richest event) and Domaine du Divonne, which is also the home of one of France’s most famous casinos.
If golf is less of a priority, the region is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, who flock to the thinner air for tremendous hiking, climbing and winter sports. The incredible landscape of the French Alps has so much to offer, and with some outstanding courses is a great choice for a golf holiday with a slightly different edge.
