Sardinia is distinct from mainland Italy as much culturally as it is geographically; the natives, known as Sardis, are fervently aware of their local identity, perhaps as a result of its almost constant domination by Phoenicians, Romans, Pisans, Genovese and Spaniards. The islands ancient history can be traced back a millennium before the arrival of the Romans, and evidence of this time is most poignantly seen in the circular stone fortresses known locally as nuraghe, about 7,000 of which still remain.The island’s coastline is legendary, with beautiful coves and bays, where sun-seekers flock during the summer months. The rich cultural and historical landscape is embellished by amazing natural beauty, and also some fantastic golf. The best options are the Is Molas Resort, just a short drive south of Cagliari, and the Cervo Hotel and Resort near Orbia, and the northernmost tip of the island.
