HAWKSTONE PARK HOTEL, GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
Location: Weston-under-Redcastle, Shropshire, 15 miles North of Shrewsbury, 56 miles NW of Birmingham SY4 5UYThere can be few golfing venues that rival Hawkstone Park's setting; the two championship courses and the academy layout are nestled in a Grade 1 English landscape, next to the ruins of a medieval castle and the stunning cliffs of the Follies.
Hawkstone Course
The Hawkstone Course was established in 1920, and the tremendous layout was where a young Sandy Lyle cut his golfing teeth. The manicured fairways are lined with towering oak and birch, and while the awesome surroundings may be a distraction, the 6,497 yard track has some superb holes that require maximum attention. The best are around the turn, where dramatic holes include the 12th, where the moat of the ruined castle has been cleverly incorporated.
Championship Course
The Championship Course underlines Hawkstone Park's strength, being one of few golfing resorts in the West Midlands to boast two genuine tests. The 6,763 yard layout was conceived by Ryder Cup veteran Brian Huggett and was formerly known as the Windmill. Since opening in 1995, the course has matured nicely, and is known for its Americanisms, like oval-shaped tees, rolling fairways and most notably the expanses of threatening water. Its best hole is the 10th, a par-5 that dog-legs around the water, testing the bravery of every golfer.
Academy Course
The six-hole Academy Course is a delightful experience, one that is especially useful for beginners and learners, but is also a good opportunity for better players to work on that all-important short game. The resort also has a 20-bay driving range, and good putting and chipping practice areas.
The 66 bedrooms in Hawkstone Park's hotel have been the subject of extensive refurbishment in recent times, and are now stylishly decorated and ideally equipped for a comfortable stay. For that special occasion, it is possible to upgrade to one of the sumptuous superior rooms and suites.
Every guest room is fitted with luxury extras like a flat screen satellite television. The relaxing accommodation will ensure that visitors are revitalised, and ready to explore all that Hawkstone has to offer, with the incredible natural beauty of the surroundings, in addition to the fantastic golf courses.
Exploring the 18th century Hawkstone Follies is an incredible experience; the fantasyland of cliffs, crags, caves, woodland, and ancient monuments has been awarded Grade 1 certification by the English Heritage organisation. Highlights include the Swiss Bridge, a vintage wooden structure spanning a deep chasm, and the Monument, a 100-foot column whose peak affords views over no less than 13 counties.
Hawkstone Park is in the heart of Shropshire, allowing visitors easy access to explore the charming black and white villages and market towns. The county's capital is Shrewsbury, one of England's finest Tudor towns and birthplace of Charles Darwin. In the local area, the Ironbridge Gorge and Museum is worth a visit for a taste of the Industrial Revolution.
The 10th on the Hawkstone is the resort's signature; named ‘The Road Hole', the 518 yard par-5 hugs the dramatic cliff top.
The fine Hawkstone Restaurant is famed for its extravagant Sunday lunches.
In the Terrace Restaurant, guests will enjoy the superb food, and also the fine views of the 12th century Red Castle.
