It was not until the late 1980s, after Russia's emergence from the Iron Curtain, that golf began to gain popularity in the local area. The sport's continued rise has culminated in the construction of the Moscow Country Club, which is home to the country's finest course.
The course was actually created under the auspices of an initiative by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to attract investment, but it now welcomes the avid travelling golfer. Still the only 18-hole championship course around Moscow, the Country Club was designed by Robert Trent Jones Junior, and is the venue for the PGA European Tour's Russian Open.
Trent Jones has created a traditional parkland layout which features water on half of its holes - in fact, the signature holes has water everywhere; on route to the green some 576 yards away, golfers will have to plot around a network of threatening water hazards. Weighing up the risk versus the reward is crucial at the Moscow Country Club, which is a true eastern gem.
