Murcar Links was founded in 1909 by the head professional at nearby Royal Aberdeen, then refined by the legendary James Braid. Set on proper links land just north of Aberdeen, it's the kind of place where the North Sea wind is never just background, it's part of the scorecard.
The routing heads out towards the coast before working back inland, so you get a real mix: exposed holes that demand flighted shots and sensible targets, then more sheltered stretches where you can be a bit braver. Underfoot, it's classic links, firm, fast-running turf that rewards imagination, especially if you're happy to use the ground.
Braid's influence shows in the bunkering. They're deep, properly penal and often positioned right where you'd like to aim, which makes course management a big part of the fun. Miss the fairway and the gorse and whins are more than decorative, you'll think twice before taking on any heroic line.
If you're building an Aberdeenshire itinerary around Royal Aberdeen, Murcar is a cracking companion round nearby. The greens are quick and true, the fairways firm, and the rough is proper links rough, the kind that makes you grateful for a decent lie. On a calm day it's a fair but demanding test, on a windy day it's a scrap, and that's exactly what links golf should be. Include Murcar Links on your next Aberdeen golf break and you'll get a genuine members' links that feels unapologetically traditional.

At 6,300 yards, Murcar is relatively short by modern standards, but that does not detract from the golfing experience. The fairways are unusually tight, demanding premium accuracy to find the correct position, and even then, the cruel humps and hollows can throw the ball off into some awkward positions.
Cut between dunes and streams, and bordered by heather, gorse and brutal rough, Murcar is as tricky as it is beautiful, and should certainly be part of any good Aberdeen golf tour.

Great fun course with a much better front 9 than back but still good to play. Few too many blind shots but a real challenge. Clubhouse service superb and food and drink excellent. A little expensive when standard compared to courses either side

Proper links course which was challenging but enjoyable for our group with handicaps from 12 to 18 Very tight fairways so accuracy of the tee is very important A few blind tee shots so tips from very friendly pro in the pro shop before our round were most helpful Would strongly recommend including as part of a trip in this area

A nice surprise - a bit scruffy round the edges but overall a fun course and worth playing

Great traditional club with a very challenging course. Greens were immaculate but the dry spell has baked the fairways and with the stiff breeze, a lot of the holes were tough to navigate with balls pinging off the fairways, which are very tight. Need to play again as plenty of blind shots mean local knowledge very useful. Layout is interesting and challenging and the club has a charming members venue feel. Not uptown the standard of close neighbour, Royal Aberdeen, but well worth a visit.
