    Poggio Dei Medici Golf Resort

The classically Tuscan lines of poplar trees border the estate, while the raised points of the undulating course afford magnificent views over the valley toward the town of Scarperia.

The course itself is a demanding par-72 layout, which reaches 7,036 yards from the championship markers, but there are tees to suit golfers of all abilities. Poggio Dei Medici is built in accordance with USGA construction standards, and as a result the course is always maintained in impeccable condition.

Without doubt one of the finest golf courses in Italy, this stunning course is a fantastic choice for a golf holiday in Tuscany, a fact recently underlined with the award of ‘Best Golf Club', from the world renowned Condé Nast Traveller publication.

The great changes in elevation around Poggio Dei Medici will have a big impact on your club selection.

    Accommodation

The accommodation at the Poggio Dei Medici resort is typically Tuscan, based around the 16th century Villa di Cignano, where the low rise blocks are capped with terracotta tiles. The 70 hotel rooms are divided between 5 separate courts, or blocks, giving the resort an intimate and private ambience.

Looking out across the golf course, guests will be met with views through the valley and towards the foothills of the Appenines, while inside the rooms there is a fantastic marriage of traditional character and contemporary convenience.

All rooms are decorated in the customary style of Tuscany, and are equipped with satellite television, telephone, safe deposit box, mini-bar, air-conditioning and a luxurious bathroom, complete with hairdryer and bathrobes.

Respective blocks overlook different parts of the estate and the golf course, but all ensure complete comfort, and this all-encompassing resort is among the finest destination for a golf holiday in Italy.

In 2004, the brand new club house overlooking Lake Cignano was opened, and its facilities are available to hotel guests. These include outdoor swimming pools, jacuzzis, a steam room, fitness centre and purpose built massage treatment rooms.

Within the resort there are three separate restaurants, serving a fantastic range of local classics and international dishes.

Caninetta Antinore, near Santa Maria Novella, is among Florence's best dining rooms, where the refined menu is complemented by a superb wine list.

    Golfer reviews

We enjoyed our golf holiday to the Poggio Dei Medici Resort and wanted to thank everyone at Your Golf Travel for their hard work. The hotel is very nice and it has a relaxing atmosphere.

The new club house overlooking Lake Cigano was a good addition and we spent plenty of time relaxing and making use of its sauna and swimming pool. When you get off the golf course after a long day in the sun this is the perfect place to freshen up.

The golf course is excellent. It will provide a challenge for good players while being playable for higher handicappers. The undulating fairways mean the course is enjoyable to play on and in the setting Tuscan sun it is a joy to behold. The condition of the course is out of this world as well and the greens were fun to putt on.

I wouldn’t recommend this place for a group of guys on a lads golf break but would definitely recommend it to family groups and others looking for a relaxing golf holiday that has the added bonus of great food and wine.

Thanks again for all your help. We shall be in touch when we have a date in mind for our next golf tip.

My wife and I have recently returned from a golf holiday in Italy (July 2011). We stayed at Poggio dei Medici in Tuscany and had a great time. A hire car is necessary as the hotel is over an hour from Pisa airport and approx half hour from Florence airport. Although it is a long drive the golf resort is relatively easy to find. Our golf break package was a bed and breakfast deal so the car was great for eating out in the local area. We had stayed there previously so did not bother with any trips to Florence etc and were able to play golf every day.

The hotel is part of the UNA group and has only 70 rooms, spread over different buildings. We were in the main hotel and our room was massive; more like an apartment! Staff were very attentive and we were well looked after. The hotel facilities are excellent. It is not a place to stay if you want a lively night life, after dinner there is no entertainment. It is more suited to couples than groups.

The golf course is very challenging and I would not recommend it for high handicappers (6650 yards off yellow and 5900 yards off red). It is quite hilly which means a buggy is a good idea in the heat of summer. The greens were in superb condition and the fairways were very lush which meant the course played a bit longer than its yardage. Accuracy is required on most tee shots as the rough is quite punishing. It is the kind of course which frustrates you the first time you play it, but once you know the lie of the land, it is a great challenge and very enjoyable. The views from all parts of the course of the surrounding hills and Tuscan countryside are magnificent so even if you are having a bad round it is an enjoyable golfing experience.

There are excellent practice facilities, with a driving range on site. Post game refreshments can be taken at the pool restaurant which served some delicious food and prices for drinks were reasonable.

We were on an unlimited golf deal which I just added to the value of the golf trip. I would give the resort 9 out of 10. It is the first time we have used Your Golf Travel but will not be the last. The service provided was excellent and as I said the value for money for the whole golf break was outstanding.

Poggio Dei Medici is a well established course in a beautiful location just north of Florence and easy to find due to excellent signposting. The course is very scenic, quite hilly and has fabulous views. The greens are USPGA and much better than all but the best courses in the UK. There is some water on the course but it does not really come into play making it good to play for all abilities.

The hotel was not busy and they offered us an upgrade to a junior suite with sitting room and terrace. It was large, nicely decorated, comfortable and very clean, all the staff were very nice and helpful. Breakfast was elaborate with fruits, juices and yoghurts, cheese, ham and salami and eggs can be ordered however you like them.

There is a restaurant and a spa with Turkish bath, the practice area is beautiful with views over the whole course. The nearby medieval town of Scarperia has nice restaurants of which we liked. A short drive north is a large outlet called Barberino which has Prada, Ralph Lauren, Cavalli you name it, a super destination for a golf break.
