Set in the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja, San Roque Golf Resort is one of Sotogrande's most respected addresses, home to two championship courses that have kept it firmly within the elite of Andalucian golf destinations. The New Course, which opened in 2003, soon picked up Top 100 in Europe recognition in several rankings over the years and has hosted both the Spanish Open in 2006 and European Tour Qualifying School, so it's been tested by the very best.
The layout rewards proper course management. The fairways look inviting from the tee, but there are over 100 bunkers to negotiate and the greens are on the small side, with plenty of movement, so you'll want to be on the right tier. Add in a few elevated tee shots and some cracking views across the surrounding hills and you've got a proper thinking golfer's round. I'd keep the driver on a shorter leash than you might expect and lean on your long irons and hybrids to find the right angles in. It's strategic rather than brutal, rewarding golfers who think their way around rather than simply trying to overpower it.
You're also brilliantly placed for a proper Sotogrande golf week. San Roque sits minutes from some of the finest courses in Europe, including Valderrama, Real Club de Sotogrande, La Reserva and Almenara. It also makes a handy base if you're playing a 'headline' course nearby and want another quality championship test without adding travel time. If you're building a golf trip to Sotogrande, this is a course that deserves a round.
Who is this for?
Golfers heading to Sotogrande or the Costa del Sol who want a well-kept, strategic championship course with proper Tour credentials and big scenery to match.
Who is it best for?
Mid to low handicappers, or anyone who enjoys plotting their way round rather than just hitting it as far as possible. It's also a great 'second round' alongside Valderrama or Sotogrande when you want quality without the same level of intimidation.

San Roque Golf & Resort
In 2003 the San Roque Golf & Resort welcomed its a championship layout designed and constructed by the esteemed American architect, Perry Dye. The course measures a colossal 7,246 yards from the tips, and although it differs greatly in style to its neighbour, it presents an equally formidable challenge.
With unparalleled views over the Guadalquiton River and the amazing azure of the Mediterranean, the New is an unforgettable experience, and was rewarded with the 2006 Spanish Open. More than 100 strategically positioned bunkers guard the impeccable fairways and greens, and while the cork tree-lined targets are more forgiving than the Old, visiting golfers will require sound strategy and course management to score well.
With an internationally renowned golf academy and two of the region's finest championship course, visiting the San Roque Golf & Resort is an essential component of any good golfing holiday in Southern Spain.

This was not the course we were expecting to play , we had been to san Roque and played the main course before although many years ago and enjoyed it very much , when we arrived they said you will be o the resort course we didn't even know it existed , the course and greens were shocking cow field comes to mind it spoilt our day. We are not happy that this was not pointed out to us there was no club house the changing rooms and wc was a large shed type wooden thing , the coffee house was an outside catering van , if we had have known this we wouldn't have chosen this venue

Poor man's version of San Roque. Would have loved to have tried the Old Course. Much better courses out there than New Course....they should call it the forgotten course..Seve's par 3 was a highlight though

This course is all about the design. Undulating fairways, very tricky Greens, many bunkers - a real challenge to 2 putt! The Pro Shop said the New Course was hilly (and the buggies 50 Euro) but they obviously hadn't played Los Arqueros! The course did not seem to have seen much water but the Greens and Tees were fine. There were 6 Tee positions on offer. The Greens were the fastest I have seen for some time and reading them was a nightmare - want to feel like you've played Augusta, well this does it quite well. The whole set up looks very impressive, as is the Green Fee for the Old Course which we couldn't touch. Massive Academy here. We had a lucky day following a slow (!) 4 ball so had a very pleasant round. Again YGT was recognised immediately at the Pro Shop. Nice day and worth the longer trip to get here.
