Designed in 1907 by five-time Open champion J H Taylor, this is without doubt one of the finest downland courses in the south of England. It's blessed with superb vistas of the Sussex Downs on one side and the English Channel on the other, not to mention a course that entertains from start to finish.
Being set high up on the South Downs, you can enjoy the glorious views of the sea and the Downs at some point on virtually every hole of this course. What this elevated position also means is that the wind is nearly always a factor when playing Seaford. As a result, it can often play considerably longer than its 6,546 yards would suggest.
That, combined with a par of 69 with just one par-5 and seven par-4s over 400 yards, shows just how challenging it is to play to your handicap here. No wonder the standard scratch score is higher than par, at 71.
This is an entertaining course for virtually all ability levels, and you really have to think your way round when the wind is blowing. The 15th, the last of the short holes (although it's over 200 yards) can take anything between a driver and a six iron to reach the green, depending on the breeze. The closing hole is another highlight, demanding a testing drive which mustn't be pushed right followed by a testing approach shot to a green well protected by deep bunkers.
Recently, two extra holes have been added to the course, which enables you to play a ‘short course' of the front nine and then two new holes which head back to the clubhouse. Another integral advantage this course enjoys is the underlying downland chalk, which ensures that the course is rarely closed for play in winter while providing firm fairways and greens in the summer.
Once your round is over, the clubhouse, built in 1907, is a welcoming place to hunker down for a meal and a drink. It has been regularly modernised and extended and includes a bar, lounge and a large dining room overlooking the course. Luckily though, the original character of the building remains, with the traditional ambience enhanced by pictures of past captains and honour boards going back to the club's origins over 100 yards ago.
The practice range is generously proportioned and includes covered bays to protect you on wet days and there's also a dedicated chipping green and bunkers to practise your short game.
