St Mellion is arguably the premier golfing destination in the South-West, boasting two championship courses, and has welcomed the European Tour's elite on no less than six occasions for the Benson and Hedges International.
Opened in 1987, the Nicklaus Course at St Mellion was the Golden Bear's first project in the UK, and to this day Jack rates it as one of his best creations. The £2.5 million investment now complete was overseen by the Nicklaus design team.
From the championship tee markers the course measures 7,019 yards and is a thorough examination, but there are tees to suit golfers of all abilities. The Nicklaus is typical of its designer's architectural ethos, with a premium being placed on finding the correct position from the elevated tees in order to attack the flags. Inaccuracy will be punished severely by the strategically positioned bunkers and water hazards around this South-Western gem.
Did you know? Jack Nicklaus speaks highly of his design, going as far as to say St Mellion is 'potentially the finest golf course in Europe'.

Formerly known as the Old Course, St Mellion's Kernow is often in the shadow of Jack Nicklaus' creation next door, but it is a fine championship layout in its own right. Though not particularly long by modern standards - the Kernow measures 5,782 yards - there is no shortage of challenge and intrigue.
A major face-lift has seen the addition of new lakes and bunkers, plus some totally rebuilt putting surfaces. Spectacular scenery surrounds the course, whose highlights include the short 12th, where the green is guarded closely by water, and the memorable par-4 closing hole which demands two excellent strikes.

Great Golf hotel. Not super-posh, but certainly to an adequate standard... Food OK, again, not tip-top, but more than adequate. Staff very helpful indeed! Especially Peter (I think) at reception, and Garry in the pro shop. Many thanks!!

From arrival to departure, every member of staff we encountered was friendly, welcoming and helpful. Nothing ever seemed too much trouble, and it genuinely made a difference to the overall experience. The service was consistently warm and professional in the hotel, bars and restaurant. The food was also a real positive. There was a good selection available and everything we had during the stay was very enjoyable.the quality was good and there portions were generous. The spa facilities were another highlight spacious, relaxing and a great place to unwind after a day of golf. Where the hotel falls slightly short is in the rooms and some of the public areas. The bedrooms are quite basic for a resort of this reputation and felt a little tired in places. Our room had no fridge or coffee machine, the beds were not particularly well made, and the shower leaked onto the bathroom floor. None of these are huge issues individually, but together they stop the hotel from feeling as premium as the golf resort itself. The bars were also disappointing, especially the “sports bar.” It lacked atmosphere, had very small TVs which made watching live sport difficult, and the seating was surprisingly uncomfortable. It also closed fairly early midweek, which limited the evening atmosphere and our group ended up going back to our rooms. Overall, the staff, food and spa made for an enjoyable stay, but the hotel itself would benefit from a few upgrades and some extra attention to detail to match the quality of the golf facilities.

Much more forgiving than the Nicklaus course but still a great challenge. Everyone in the group really enjoyed this course, and it was in great condition...!!

Tough and tight challenge... Very nice conditions, but quite unforgiving in regard to narrow fairways and cliffs/drop-offs each side in many cases. Pretty spectacular.

The signature Nicklaus course at St Mellion is well worth experiencing. The course was in excellent condition and has several standout holes that are genuinely memorable. The par 4 sixth in particular is a fantastic golf hole and one that will stick in the memory. The layout is challenging throughout, with a real championship feel, and the scenery adds to the overall experience. Again there is no halfway house, you do pass close to the clubhouse between the 9th and 10th holes, making it easy enough to stop for refreshments if needed. The staff around the resort were, excellent and added to the overall experience. Where I’m slightly more critical is the value for money. The green fee pricing puts the Nicklaus course up against some very strong premium golf courses, and while it is definitely worth playing, I do feel it is slightly overpriced for the overall experience offered. The course quality is excellent, but at that price point expectations naturally become very high in terms of facilities. Overall though, it is still a course I would recommend playing at least once. It’s a challenging and memorable round on a beautifully maintained course, even if the pricing feels a little ambitious compared to some competing venues.

The course was in great condition and has some really memorable feature holes. It’s a challenging layout with plenty of stunning scenery throughout, making it enjoyable to play. The biggest downside was the pace of play. A 5 hour round is simply too long, and there didn’t seem to be any marshals visible managing the course. Slow play can happen, especially with larger groups out on the course, but it really needs to be managed better to keep rounds moving at a reasonable pace. Another disappointment was the halfway hut setup, which was just two vending machines. For a resort with such a strong golfing reputation, it felt underwhelming and could definitely be improved. That said, Kernow is a fantastic course and absolutely worth playing if you visit St Mellion.

The course was very wet under foot, due to the amount of rainfall the south of England has had. I think the course should have been rested for a few days and maybe rescheduled till a couple weeks after unfortunately. The course was still good though, just the condition was not the greatest.
