The 18-hole County Course is the signature of the Essex Golf and Country Club, and is a tremendous blend of challenging and enjoyable holes. When played from the championship markers, the layout measures some 6,907 yards, making power a serious advantage, particularly on the 5 par-5s which can offer good birdie chances.
The excellent design is fortunate to be supported by a fully computerised irrigation system which helps to keep the teeing areas and putting surfaces in pristine condition throughout the year. The best holes on the course bookend the start and end of your round, where it is essential to avoid the severe bunkers that guard the greens.
The Garden Course is a charming 9-hole course, which is kept in comparable condition to the formidable County layout. The mixture of challenging par-3s and short par-4s make the Garden ideal for beginners and learners, but also represent some light relief for those who have tackled the ‘big course'.
In addition to the two golf courses, the Essex Golf & Country Club is one of the most complete practice and tuition destinations, featuring a 20-bay driving range, a specialised academy facility which boasts the latest video technology and even an indoor practice area. The qualified PGA professionals are on hand to provide expert guidance and tuition.
Guests enjoying the superb facilities on offer throughout this superb resort can relax in one of the 42 spacious guest bedrooms.
If the exertions of the Essex's facilities leave visitors tired, there is no doubt that they will enjoy the over-sized beds and comfortable surroundings. Added extras include satellite television and outstanding panoramic views across the golf course and the estate.
The outstanding gymnasium features the Technogym key system, including the new Excite range, and is one of the county's largest. The aerobic studio is home to scheduled classes like Body Pump, Tai Chi and Pilates, while there are also holistic and spinning studios. Guests can relax in the swimming pool, steam room, sauna and sun beds, or play tennis on the six indoor and three outdoor courts. Those travelling with young families can leave the kids at the crèche while they take advantage of the superb facilities.
The Sports Brasserie serves home-cooked classics in a comfortable clubhouse style.

Thank you for you help to organise the golf break for my wife and I. The upgrade to a mini suite was very much appreciated. We had a great view from our window overlooking the 10th. The accommodation was very pleasant, and the food was excellent. The staff were very helpful indeed, they even helped to organise flowers for my wife, for our anniversary. The golf course was of a very good standard and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Finally I would like to say we will be using yourselves again in the future, and recommending our friends to book with you. Regards,
Just to let you know how much we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Essex golf & country club, super golf course, & the accomadation very good, great value for money. With regards,
Dear Your Golf Travel,
My wife and I have just returned from a golf break at the Essex Golf and Country Club that we booked to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we had the most lovely time. The weather was great which is always a bonus on a golf holiday in England!
The County Course was really nice and much better than our home golf course!
The hotel was really nice as well and we made good use of the swimming pool, the sauna and the steam room. The Sports Brasserie was a great place to eat and we enjoyed our evening meals and lunch here over our golf trip.
All in all a very good golf weekend and we were very impressed with the service we got from YGT...We will definitely be back to book more golf breaks in the future.
Our golf break to the Essex Golf & Country Club was excellent value for money and all aspects of the club itself were top notch. The hotel was comfortable and the food in the restaurant was lovely.
All of the members of our group thought the County Course was marvellous. The greens were in perfect condition and the water features on the course added to both the challenge and the charm. The course is beautiful and is of a challenging length for most golfers.
Overall, the group would give the golf holiday a rating of 8 out of 10. This is based on fantastic value for money, quality of the course, efficient friendly staff, & use of complementary hotel facilities. A great venue for a weekend golf trip for a very appealing price!
Your Golf Travel made the whole process very smooth. The group felt like everything was in hand and on the occasions we required additional information or had extra requirements, you didn't let us down.
Having just returned from our golf break to the Essex Golf & Country Club I must congratulate Yourgolftravel.com and the venue itself for their first class service on a fantastic weekend break.
The golf course was fairly long and, despite the previous two days rain, in excellent condition with some challenging holes that demand straight drives savvy approach shots. In my opinion the course would be suitable for all abilities but short hitters may struggle to score well!
The food and accommodation were both very good and the staff were excellent and friendly at all times, even offering to take us to the local town one evening! They accommodated our request for an earlier tee time on the Sunday letting us go off the 10th with no fuss.
I would have to give this golf break an 8.5 out of 10 and would definitely recommend this venue and YGT to friends.
We went to the Essex Golf & Country Club for our golf break, the course was very decent and very well maintained. The greens and fairway were in excellent condition which is always appreciable at this time of the year. The course layout is also interesting and challenging by its length and addition of water hazards and strategically located bunkers. My only regret is that most of the holes on the back nine are very similar and noisy due to the proximity of an airfield. It’s also a bit too flat in my opinion.
The clubhouse was very nice with a terrace overlooking a very scenic 18th Hole and pints at a decent price, that’s all you need for a 19th Hole. The hotel was good value for money and the rooms were very comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful especially at the main reception.
It is however quite hard to get there from London at weekends as there are no direct trains to Braintree (15 min taxi ride from the hotel) and we had to make 3 changes. A part form this the surroundings are rather nice with the exception of the noisy airfield.
For my overall verdict I would give 7 out of 10. That’s my third golf break and although it was not as good as the 2 previous ones, it was still a good experience and good value for money.
The service from YGT was very efficient. I appreciate the fact that they managed to find a decent option close to London despite of the fact that most of hotels were booked up due to post Ryder Cup excitement.
I would most definitely recommend Your Golf Travel to a friend.
The Essex was a great course, in great condition. Although it plays long everyone loved it and we all enjoyed the challenge the course provided. I would also definitely recommend the 9 hole garden course for a practice round.
The 19th hole is great, it overlooks the 9th and the 18th holes, and the value for drinks and lunch here was very reasonable.
The hotel facilities were fabulous. The rooms were spacious, and nice and clean. The spa facilities were excellent, the lovely pool, steam room, and sauna were much appreciated after a long day of golf.
Unfortunately the food side of things let us down. Breakfast did not include the cooked breakfast, only continental which was disappointing. For the evening there was only a choice of 3 meals including a vegetarian option. We felt that this was too limited and very basic. We found ourselves eating in the main bar, rather than in the golf bar which we didn’t really understand.
We all loved The Essex golf course and the hotel and would definitely go back if the food side of things was better. Aside from the food it was a great weekend so thank you for organizing it for us.
