WESTERWOOD HOTEL 4*
Location: Cumbernauld, 14 miles NE of Glasgow, 36 miles West of Edinburgh G68 0EWThe golf course at the Westerwood was designed by Seve Ballesteros and Dave Thomas, and is one of the best golf courses to be opened in Scotland in recent years.
Now the subject of a development programme designed to improve drainage and conditioning, the par-72 layout is stretched through silver birches and firs, and the heathland and heather that are so typical of Scotland. The architects have created many holes that are tournament style, and the course will challenge the ball-striking of even the best players.
Notable holes include the fourth and sixth, where Ballesteros and Thomas challenge their guests with treacherously positioned bunkers. However, the signature hole is without doubt the magnificent par-3 15th, set against the backdrop of a 60-foot quarry face with a devilish burn skirting the front of the putting surface.
The hotel and golf course at the Westerwood are fortunate to be situated at the base of the Campsie Hills, yet also within a short drive of both Glasgow city centre and the international airport.
The hotel boasts over 150 bedrooms, all of which have been recently refurbished to an excellent standard, as befits a purpose-built 4-star resort. The finishings are modern, and all rooms benefit from satellite flat screen TV, WiFi technology, complimentary refreshments and luxury bathrooms fitted with walk-in power showers.
The standard of the hotel is testament to the £5 million modernisation scheme, which is now nearing completion, and is perfect for a fantastic golf break.
The New Beauty Suite is now open, and offers hotel guests the chance to relax with health and beauty treatments in the five fully air-conditioned rooms, as part of the Reflections Spa and Leisure facility. Also available for use are the heated swimming pool, sauna, steam room and gymnasium. The most active guests may wish to take advantage of the dance classes and outdoor tennis courts.
Part of any stay at the Westerwood should be a trip to Glasgow, arguably Scotland's most vibrant, cosmopolitan city. There are many points of cultural interest, and a multitude of excellent options for eating and drinking.
