Woods to return to action at Firestone
July 29, 2011 by Brian · Leave a Comment
There haven’t been too many glimpses of former world number one Tiger Woods this 2011 season, with injury playing a major part in his prolonged absence from the competitive stage.
However, in a news release issued through his personal website on Thursday, Woods stated that he would be making his competitive comeback at next week’s WGC Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone, Ohio.
Woods hasn’t played competitive golf since pulling out of the Players Championship after just nine holes, after aggravating ligaments in his troublesome left knee and also straining his left Achilles tendon – remnants of damage caused during the third round of the US Masters where Woods hit a recovery out of pine straw on the 17th hole.
Woods has stated in the past that he wouldn’t return to competitive action until he was 100% fit, and the injury kept him out of both the US Open at Congressional and the Open Championship at Royal St. Georges. Woods had previously undergone surgery on his left knee four times, but stayed away from the surgeon’s knife this time.
But his return to Firestone – a course where he has an immensely impressive record, having only once finished outside the top four and winning the event seven times – suggests Woods is ready to compete.
“I’m feeling fit and ready to tee it up again. I’m excited to get back out there,” said the 35-year-old on his personal website.
However, by his own admission on his website, Woods has only just returned to the practice ground after his doctors insisted he give his injuries plenty of time to heal and it may be asking much of Woods to become a serious contender in the event despite his enviable record, as he chases a first tournament win since 2009.
More spice will be added to Tiger’s comeback as Steve Williams – Woods’ caddy until sacked recently by the former world number one – will be carrying the bag of Australian Adam Scott, who is also in the field, and it would make for an explosive first two rounds if Woods and Scott were paired together. Woods is yet to reveal who will be on his bag.

As a location for a golfing holiday, Scotland can be pretty hard to beat and offers golfers a huge array of choice when it comes to selecting a destination.
Scotland is home to some of the finest golf courses in the British Isles with five of its best courses featuring in the Open Championship rota – the Old Course at St. Andrews, Carnoustie Golf Links, Muirfield, Turnberry and Royal Troon.
And then there are the young pretenders, such as Kingsbarns on the Fife coastline and a venue for the Dunhill Links Championship; and Castle Stuart Golf Links, seen recently on TV as venue for the Barclays Scottish Open.
But for those seeking a golf holiday in Scotland that takes them off the beaten track and away from the better-known and most popular venues then there are plenty of hidden gems scattered far and wide across the Scottish countryside to suit every player.
Here are six Scottish gems that golfers might not be familiar with, but should put on their itinerary for their next Scottish golf break.

Links golf was born in Scotland and since has spread all over the UK. Few courses are genuine links tests though and outside Scotland, Ireland is perhaps the best place to test your skills on a traditional links course. The Emerald Isle is firmly in the golfing spotlight at the moment thanks to the success of Irish golfers in the Majors in the last few years. Paddy Harrington kicked it all off with three quick fire majors and since then Graeme McDowell, Rory McIlory and, most recently, Darren Clarke have joined the party. Darren’s recent Open victory has raised serious questions over the Open visiting Northern Ireland in the near future and it is high time that it does so. Here are some of the very best links courses from Northern Ireland and the Republic. Read more
