Woodhall Spa

Deep in Lincolnshire's rolling countryside, Woodhall Spa is one of England's most respected inland golf venues. The Hotchkin is the headline act, a heathland test that feels every inch a championship course, especially when you miss one of those famously deep bunkers.

This is the sort of inland test you could happily play on repeat, but you do have to bring your A-game. The bunkering alone demands respect on every approach shot, with some pits so deep you'll need a ladder to see the flag. It's proper strategic golf, the kind that stays with you long after you've walked off the 18th, rewarding accuracy and punishing anything wayward.

But Woodhall Spa offers more than just the Hotchkin. As home to The National Golf Centre, this is a complete golf experience built around two 18-hole courses. The Bracken provides the perfect contrast, a more forgiving but equally enjoyable layout that lets you play your way into form or recover your confidence after tackling the main event. The onsite golf hotel keeps everything convenient, placing you right at the heart of the action with comfortable accommodation and easy access to both courses.

Expect firm, running turf and classic heathland framing, miles of pine, heather and gorse lining fairways that favour thought over brute force. It's the kind of place that reminds you why inland golf in Britain can rival anything you'll find on the coast.

If you're planning a UK golf break with serious pedigree, Woodhall Spa is hard to beat for pure golf.

Golf Courses at Woodhall Spa

Hotchkin Course

The Hotchkin Course is not only the best golf course away from the coast, it is also ranked second overall in England. A number of key moments have influenced the development of this remarkable course; Harry Vardon's original 1905 design was reworked just before the Great War by Harry S. Colt, before the English Golf Union bought the site in 1995.

The firm heathland turf is the basis for the Hotchkin's character, where the majestic holes are lined by towering birch pine and broom. The predominant hazards, apart from the woodland, is the bunkering; around the greens in particular, the Hotchkin is known for its cavernous sand traps.

This inland gem is without doubt a classic, and deserves its incredible reputation; any serious golfer should make a golf break at Woodhall Spa a high priority.

Bracken Course

Donald Steel's remarkable vision for the Bracken Course has been realised with dramatic effect. Although it neighbours the Hotchkin, Steel's creation is vastly different; the undulating greens and proliferation of water are more akin to golf in America, but the Bracken adds much to the character of Woodhall Spa, and is a key part of its golf break experience.

Course is absolutely amazing and stunning but is very hard. A high handicapper could still enjoy this course but expect to be out there for some time. Everyone must play this course at some point.

Very nice attractive course …. very difficult putting greens to read but good fun….everyone in our group wanted to play it again

Suggest that senior golfers should seriously consider playing from the green markers as the carry to clear the heather from the yellows t especially if the wind is against can be very challenging Would also recommend that players practice their bunker skills

A very worthy contemporary to the Hotchkin course, very enjoyable and slightly more forgiving. Well worth a visit

Keep out of the Heather and it's playable but, you have to hit a straight ball!

We were a bit lucky with the weather, expecting a lot of rain which didn't materialize. The layout of the course is excellent, the greens were good with a lot of contours, and a good pace. Fairways were in excellent condition. Overall a great day.

The course was in excellent condition and the greens were the best we've played this year. The heather was a sensible length. The bunkers were a bit inconsistent with the depth and quality of the sand. Quite a few large stones in some.
