Cougar Point is one of Kiawah Island's smartest rounds. You still get the marsh views, river scenery and unmistakable Lowcountry setting, but this is a course that wins you over with strategy rather than sheer brute force.
If the Ocean Course is the headline act, Cougar Point is the one savvy golf travellers add to the itinerary. It is more playable, more tactical and a brilliant contrast if you are planning a multi-round Kiawah trip. Gary Player's extensive redesign, completed when the course reopened in 2017 following a ten-month renovation, gave it a new lease of life and cemented its place at the forefront of South Carolina golf.
The layout stretches to 6,875 yards and plays to a par of 72. It is not a course that tries to overwhelm you with length. Instead, it works on your decision-making from the very first tee, asking you to think about angles, respect the marsh and understand when the smart play beats the heroic one. Water and wetland are ever-present companions, not just as visual backdrops but as genuine hazards that punish the careless and reward the patient.
Cougar Point holds a strong 4.5-star rating in Golf Digest's Best Places to Play. What brings golfers back is the way the course plays. It keeps asking questions, especially when the breeze gets up, and it stays memorable long after the score has faded.
Who is this for?
Golfers visiting Kiawah Island who want more than one dimension to their trip. Cougar Point works brilliantly alongside the Ocean Course and one or two of the island's other resort layouts, making it a compelling reason to extend your stay. It suits couples, groups and bucket-list travellers alike.
Who is it best for?
Mid-handicappers and strategic thinkers who appreciate a layout that asks questions without being punishing for its own sake. Stronger players will find plenty to test them too, particularly on the back nine where the difficulty steps up considerably.

Cougar Point
Gary Player’s redesign of the Cougar Point course, formerly known as Marsh Point, has ensured its position at the forefront of South Carolina golf; the 6,875 yard layout is the ultimate in risk versus reward, set against the most spectacular backdrop.
Perhaps the least heralded of the Kiawah Island collection, Cougar Point is a layout of undeniable quality, and with the Gary Player revision, it looks set to remain a favourite at this amazing South Carolina golf holiday destination.

Although we all thought before hand that of the Courses we were playing, this one would not be the best, it was excellent, challenging, in great condition and a fun course to play. We all enjoyed it as it was lovely way to begin our tour.

Great holiday course, a lovely walk and a few holes with some lovely river views. Looks like it is property bound but nicely framed by trees. Some great holes out there, and some nasty water. Very fair if you choose the right tees. Don't play it from too far back.
