El Bosque is one of the elite group of early creations devised by the great Robert Trent Jones during his Spanish jaunt of the 1960s and 1970s. Along with the monumental associates like Sotogrande, Las Brisas and Valderrama, El Bosque helps to define the Iberian imprint made by golf’s most celebrated modern course designer.

Opened in 1975, the same year that the great Valderrama came was gifted to the golfing world, El Bosque is a classic layout that remains one of Spain’s most celebrated courses. The pine-ridden landscape north of Chiva is the basis for El Bosque, which is a test of golfing strategy and skill.

Measuring less than 7,000 yards, El Bosque cannot be compared to the monstrous new courses that typify the contemporary design era, but Trent Jones’ extraordinary reputation was not founded on creating long layouts that merely test the ball striking of visiting golfers. Rather, RTJ used his great subtlety and guile to manufacture an extraordinary challenge, and one which deserves to be held in the upper echelons of European golf.
