Kilspindie Golf Club began life as Luffness Golf Club in 1867, often cited as the 35th registered golf club in the world. Twenty-seven years later the membership split in two. One group moved closer to Gullane to form Luffness New Golf Club, while the other stayed on the links land by Craigielaw Farm and became Kilspindie.
What you get today is a cracking Willie Park Jnr. and Ben Sayers design set right beside Aberlady Bay on the rugged Firth of Forth coastline. If you like your golf old-school and wind-exposed, you're in the right place. It's classic links terrain where the ground game matters, the breeze is always part of the conversation and you'll hit plenty of shots that look perfect until they land. Expect tight, well-placed bunkering, firm running fairways and greens that feel even smaller when the wind is quartering off the bay.
Kilspindie is often called a hidden gem of the East Lothian coast, and it earns that tag. You're surrounded by headline acts, with as many as 15 coastal courses within 10 miles, including Muirfield, Royal Musselburgh and Gullane. Kilspindie might not have the same noise around it, but it's a proper test when the wind gets up and it's ideal for balancing out a multi-course itinerary.
Who is this for?
Golfers keen to explore the golfing paradise of the East Lothian coastline beyond the headline names, without sacrificing authentic links character or paying top-end green fees.
Who is it best for?
Mid-to-low handicappers who appreciate strategic, old-school links golf and groups building an East Lothian tour around a mix of big names and genuine hidden gems.

Power is certainly not the most important factor here, where considerable trouble can be found not far from the fairways. Kilspindie outlines its quirkiness right from the off, beginning with a tough par-3 which faces across the Forth to the Kingdom of Fife.
Arguably the best holes are those at the start of the round, with a succession of tough holes tracking the coast towards Edinburgh. Generally played into a considerable prevailing wind, these opening holes can ruin a scorecard, especially as it is not too hard to find the rocky beach.
The signature hole is the idyllic 8th, an exquisite par-3 played across Gosford Bay which demands nerves of steel and a brave heart. Kilspindie is well worth a visit for a taste of genuine Scottish links during a golf break in East Lothian.
Kilspindie Golf Club is situated just outside the village of Aberlady in East Lothian off the A198, 4 miles from Longniddry strain station.

This course is a great starter for a links experience. With fast running fairways, pot bunkers and fast greens these all add the need for control. The clubhouse changing rooms and facilities used to be an original feel and character, but were being upgraded with top end showers and toilets.

Great course, played a few times now and enjoyed every time. Pro wasn’t keen on moving tee time forward despite no one being 3 or 4 holes in front but enjoyed the round.

Played at the end of August in very windy conditions. The course is right on the coast of the Firth of Forth with some lovely views. We fortunately avoided the earlier rain and played with one of their two buggies. This is an 125 year old members club. The staff in the pro shop were friendly and helpful. Fortunately the rough was mostly light and finding and playing errant balls was generally Ok. We had an 11:00am tee time on a Tuesday and the course was quite quiet with the weather being poor earlier so we got round in just over 3 hours.

Full of history golf course with amazing clubhouse. The course can seem short but on a windy day the first holes are very challenging. The view is stunning as the first holes are on the coast. True link course as it’s best.
