Despite its name, Luffness New has been providing traditional and extremely testing championship links golf since 1894, when the course designed by Old Tom Morris was inaugurated.

The course is an Open Championship qualifying host when the tournament is staged at nearby Muirfield, and while it is easy to say that Luffness New is excellent, it is difficult to generalise on its character. The coastal winds can change on a whim, making the course unrecognisable from morning to afternoon.
Luffness is links golf as it should be, and lovers of old-fashioned seaside courses should certainly include it in any East Lothian tour.
