The course itself was designed by American architect Cabell B. Robinson, whose trademark can also be seen at the nearby La Cala resort, and is an excellent parkland track. Santana measures just short of 7,000 yards from the back tees, and the main difficulty is in avoiding the strategically positioned sand traps, which are filled with sand produced from crushed marble.

The outstanding natural beauty of the surroundings may well be the predominant characteristic here, but the golf course should certainly not be underestimated; each hole is designed to be distinct, and the emphasis is on sound course management and prudent strategy.

There may not be a single signature hole, but notable challenges include the monstrous 650-yard 8^th, while the favourite hole of the designer himself is the closing hole, an exacting par-4 that is bordered by a lake all down the right hand side.
