Omaha Beach overlooks the shoreline of the D-Day landings, a site steeped in wartime history, where some 155,000 Allied troops came ashore in 1944. A short drive away is the Normandy American Cemetery, where some 10,000 United States infantrymen were laid to rest, while the artificial military harbour is also in the local area. This part of Normandy is also famous for its history and architecture; visit Bayeux to take in the ancient cathedral and the famous tapestry, whose imagery is a tribute to the region's colourful social and political history.
