Celtic Manor Course Review

Celtic ManorWell, I’m sitting at my desk at work wishing that I was back at Celtic Manor, or, back in bed sleeping off a tiring couple of days on the resort. As far as a review of the two days, only too happy to give my own personal opinion of the resort and its facilities.

Golf courses: Played the Montgomerie and the Roman Road, both for the first time and they were excellent, the fairways were lush and sprung under foot with virtually every iron shot giving up a sizable divot.

The first cut of rough, only entered into a handful of times thankfully, while also lush was not that penalising always giving the opportunity to get a club on the back of the ball. The real rough, only in once or twice was a ball eater but then only to be expected. The greens were fabulous, difficult to read but in terrific condition and very receptive to a flighted ball when pin seeking. I’m not so sure that these two courses are suitable for a real beginner as they are technically challenging and also physically demanding.

The Clubhouse: What a fantastic venue the Celtic Manor Hotel, my breath was taken away by the splendour a truly 5 star establishment. It might be that I should just get out more but I was blown away by the building. The staff were plentiful helpful courteous and welcoming. The rooms were very comfortable and stylish and the catering was outstanding, there is no question that it was great value for money.

Location: Well, on the hill where it is, absolutely fabulous with stunning views all around from all over the 2 courses and of course from the 8th floor of the hotel where we were accommodated.

Your Golf Travel service: Outstanding in all aspects.

Just back from a break at Celtic Manor and what a brilliant weekend it was.We stayed in the Manor House. The staff were very welcoming very efficient and very friendly throughout our stay.Excellent rooms clean and secure. But the reason we came was to play golf.Played the Montgomery first and it did not disappoint absolutely superb condition from tee to green.A buggy has to be seriously considered as there are some long walks on some holes. We played the Roman Road the following day and I would not be able to say which course is the better as this too was in superb condition. We found walking a lot easier on the Roman Road .Found food and drinks a little pricey but I do not play at a course with the same facilities usually and perhaps I am being a bit foolish to expect any other at such a high quality golf venue.
    Accomodation 10 out of 10
    Staff 10 out of 10
    Golf 10 out of 10
    Thanks for a great Weekend

What a great trip. The golf was great and we were glad to have changed to an earlier tee time for our first round as a 3.00 pm start could have meant we would still be playing in the dark!!! The buggies for the Montgomery were absolutely essential. Both the Roman Road and Montgomery courses were great.

The accommodation in the resort hotel was perfect as was the food. The staff were very helpful and we can’t wait to have a repeat next year.

Many thanks to Tom Hall for all his help as well.

  • Graham Cordery says:

My visit to Celtic manor was thoroughly enjoyable and I will be going again.

I played Roman Road and the Mongomerie, both of which were in excellent condition, the greens being true and quick. Both were challenging (I’d definitely recommend a buggy for the Montgomerie) especially so when the wind got up.
The staff were friendly and helpful and there was a relaxed, non stuffy feel about the place which was refreshing for courses of such quality. Next time I may venture onto the twenty ten.
The resort room was delightful, the bar most welcoming (much to the detriment of my round the following day) and I thought the prices were reasonable. The price of a pint was only slightly more expensive than London Pub prices and cheaper than many hotels I have been to.
Overall, it was excellent value for money 9.5/10.
Tommy E. at yourgolftravel took care booking efficiently, suggesting we try Celtic Manor when we couldn’t get on at the Belfry due to availability. I would definitely recommend both Celtic Manor and yourgolftravel to anyone planning their next golf trip.

Had a fantastic weekend. Played the Montgomerie and Roman Road Course which were both immaculate despite the fact there had been some heavy rain during the previous week. The views are breath-taking, especially those of the twenty ten course when playing the Montgomerie. One thing I think I ought to mention is buggies. They are a god-send, especially on the Montgomerie which is very hilly, with some long walks between holes BUT, you can only drive them on the paths which run alongside side the hole and if your shot does not land near the path side of the fairway (or otherwise), you can end up with a very long walk to your ball (and back, of course!). The course certainly shows the benefit but the same cannot be said of my legs!
The resort as a whole is excellent and the service is impeccable; from the bar staff to course marshals we could not have felt more welcome. Food and drink is a little on the pricey side but when you put that with the amount we paid to stay and play, the whole weekend was still exceptional value for money. My only real complaint would be the driving range, which is small and not as well equipped as I would have expected, especially in comparison to the rest on the resort. Overall though, brilliant experience which I would thoroughly recommend. Once again, Tom at Your Golf Travel was extremely helpful and made it very simple to make a large group booking.

  • Nick Connolly says:

Had a fantastic couple of days. Celtic Manor is a brilliant venue, played the montgomerie first which was in excellent condition. One member needed a buggy being older than the rest of us and found it difficult having to remain on the buggy path. The roman road was played the second day, however due to weather conditions only managed 9 holes, but even so it was still great value. Will definiteley go again with a view to playing the 2010 course. Stayed in the manor house which is very nice, and really impressed with the indoor route to the main complex via the escalators. At these kind of prices it’s a real bargain not to be missed. Thanks to Tom at your golf travel for organising it.

  • george taylor says:

Although the surroundings were brilliant the montgomerie course was not upto the standard I was expecting. Maybe because I didn’t play very well. Greens were overall quite boggy in places. The following day we played Roman Road -a different ball game- this course felt like a championship course and we believe we played well because of it. The resort , the staff were everything you would expext from a 5 star complex. looking forward to going back to play the 2010.
    A happy golfer.

  • george taylor says:

have already said WILL BE BACK TO PLAY THE 2010. Golf travel staff equally excellent.

  • Lynne Teeson says:

Wow, played on Roman Road and Mongomerie courses, both were excellent. Hotel was superb as were the facilities and service, couldn’t fault it, cant wait to go back

  • graham mclean says:

Well what a couple of days,my son and i are just back from Celtic Manor the best golfing experience i have had the pleasure to take part in.You see the Manor hotel as you leave the motorway and the excitement starts to overwhelm you.And i was not disappointed, the staff where welcoming and polite, the rooms where excellent. We stayed in the old Manor part of the hotel which just oozed timeless charm and history.Although it rained continiously on the first day it did not dampen our enthusiasm. The second day the weather was perfect, both the montgomerie and the roman road courses where a challenge with beautiful scenery and surroundings which we thoroughly enjoyed. We had our Monday night meal at Rafters restaurant and without a shadow of a doubt the best meal i have ever eaten.I would definatley return in the future and definatley book through your golf travel, helpful, informative and masters at their craft especially Bradley who set up the whole experience.

  • Celtic Manor

We played all three courses at the manor and enjoyed every second of it even in the rain. All three courses are kept to the highest standard and the surroundings are magnificent.

The staff at the five star manor were always willing to help and go that extra mile to make sure that our stay was stress free and very enjoyable.

Your golf travel were very efficient, knowledgeable and accommodating. Great company with great deals,

  • Graham Cordery says:

I’ve just returned from trip to Celtic Manor having had a wonderful trip that not even a Welsh deluge of rain could spoil.
Golf: We played Roman road on the first day under a deluge of Welsh rain, the course stood up pretty well for the first 9 holes although became unplayable at times on the back nine. This is not a criticism of the course, in fact it a compliment in that we persevered and completed the round. Lesser courses would have seen me return to the bar sooner.
The following day we played the Twentyten. The condition of the course was excellent especially when you consider the soaking it had had on previous days. The course itself is challenging as you would expect for ryder cup venue. Fairway bunkering, water and well guarded, sloping greens force you to think your way around the course. Having the opportunity to play the same holes that we watched avidly a couple of years ago is well worth the price of the round (and a few lake bound balls). On completion of your round you receive a personalised, engraved bag tag which I thought was a nice touch.
Resort: you cannot fault the resort itself, the accommodation is superb, the staff are helpful and friendly and the bar prices are similar to drinking in a London pub. There is also no ‘stuffyness’ that you can experience at other prestigious courses. This was my second trip and I will be making a third.

  • Graham Cordery says:

I should have also added that the booking process was excellent, Gareth at YGT was informative and helpful and I will be using their service again.

  • John Daniels says:

What can I say, the resort is supurb hotel and all the staff were 5* .2010 course and Monty –Great courses but be warned dont go in November after along spell of rain, both courses were waterlogged and I must say I think other clubs would have closed the courses .Will try in the summer next year!!

  • Mark Williams says:

This wasn’t our first jaunt to Celtic Manor and many aspects were as good as our previous visit just before the 2010 Ryder Cup. The way you are looked after during the 2010 experience makes the whole day very special. Sadly although the course layout is fantastic and an extremley tough but fair test, the flooded fairways and rough so wet it almost sucked the shoes from your feet didn’t make the actual round of golf too much fun at all! Our group was very surprised how wet it was on the fairways to say the least! Nowhere to even take a casual water drop. On accasion you were moving the ball 60 yards to get a dry spot (it was never really dry, just less wet). Stayed in the Manor this time as we were told no rooms available in the Resort but when I asked at the hotel there were plenty of rooms. The manor is nice but it’s just not the same. Wouldn’t accept that option if we went again.

  • Martin Ryan says:

Played the Roman Road and the 2010 Golf Courses – 2010 was a good layout but, unfortunately, the bunkers ate me up, the condition of both courses was good. The Club House at the 2010 was fantastic and the guy there showed us around the locker rooms where they have kept all the players names and we also received some freebies to remember our day.
Any of the bars at the hotel were well serviced obviously you payed more for a pint than you would normally but this is not going to be the local and the atmosphere was great.
The wives had a good time in the Spa while we were playing golf so that was a result and they had a great time too.
Only downer is that we stayed in the Manor and whilst it was okay I do feel the rooms needs some TLC, a bit jaded with stains and paint chips.

  • Stanley Macauley says:

Just come back from a week-end away at Celtic Manor with a couple of Bandits. I knew the facilities would be good because of the Ryder Cup but I was pleasantly surprised just how accommodating the staff were and how nice the whole Resort was…now I know how the Professional’s feel. The Resort Hotel was 1st Class although it looked like Colditz from the outside.

We were lucky to have loverly weather and played all 3 courses which were excellent. I’m not quite sure that the Twenty Ten was the best Course as we loved lots of holes on the other 2 Courses. They’re all a good test whatever your Handicap.

We got a really good deal thanks to Tom and will definately be going back but next time with a Society load of Bandits. And when we do, It will be through Your Golf Travel.

  • Michael Philp says:

Found it easily, got rained off the first day ,but we received an adverse weather voucher to return,we also won four free rounds in the par three challenge. The hotel is superb and the staff are so helpful which makes for a good stay, saying that we found the beer a tad on the expensive side but we are all frugal cornishmen(nuff said). We were offered some accom in october ,£89:00 per room but I shall hold out for the time being. Thanks for all you did for our group ,we all agreed that both courses we played were excellent and very well maintained. Thanks again kind regards Chunky Philp

  • Raymond Ma says:

I travelled last week with my wife to Celtic Manor for one night and 2 rounds of golf (Roman Road & Montgomerie) at a deal of £79 per person. We first played the Roman Road course and were advised by the pro-shop staff to make use of the free buggy for the hilly Montgomerie course the next day. Condition of the Roman course was great, but the green was difficult for us. Anyway we did enjoy the round of golf in a lovely sunny afternoon. When we arrived to check in at the Manor House, we were informed we had been upgraded to the Resort. What a surprise! The room was clean and big, with a balcony facing the golf course. The next morning we enjoyed a delicious breakfast at the resort and then proceeded to play the Montgomerie course after checking out. The course was very hilly. Despite we had a buggy we still needed to walk quite a lot as the buggy was only allowed to travel on the path. The condition of the course was excellent but difficult to play because of the hilly sloop and the green was so fast! After we finished the round we took a comfortable bath at the club house before leaving. All in all outstanding grading for the golf courses, the room, the service and the lovely weather. Thanks for Gareth for handling my booking. We are now planning for another trip to Celtic Manor to play the Twenty Ten course in the not too far future. Raymond Ma.

  • Having seen an unmissable offer of £69 pp, 6 of us travelled to Celtic Manor last week. We knew what would await us after the downpours & somewhat surprised that electric trollies were allowed on the course. Yes, the Monty & Roman Roads were extremely boggy but the greens ran true & although after 2 rounds of hard trudging, our leg muscles aching, it in no way “dampened” our enjoyment. The accomodation in The Manor was 1st class, even had “Happy Hour” in the cellar bar, the staff fantastic & the class of the venue shone with the Pro shop staff briefing & helpfulness. We will be watching for future deals & look forward to playing the 2010 & the 2 other course in drier conditions. A bonus was the weather over 2 days, wet underfoot, yes, but dry overhead. Great VFM. A mention to the Golftravel personnel that I dealt with……thanks for making it easy……see you again.

  • Sam Guyatt says:

Our 2 days of golf at the celtic manor , was very good.although the fringes of course was very wet the fairways greens in very good condition.i think under the circumstsances of how the weather has been the ground staff have done a marvalous job and the overall attitude of staff at the golf courses was exellent and a cedit to the celtic manor . every body at the hotel and golf course could not do enough for us ..1st class sevice..look forward to hopefully booking again next year.

  • David Lawford says:

Unfortunately the golf was undone by the weather. I was given the option to have a foul weather voucher or play as the course was ‘open’. I played the Montgomery on the Sunday but it shouldn’t have been open. I could get no traction for my trolley and had to splash my way around the course. I opted to take a voucher for the Roman Road course on the Monday. However we spent a pleasant night in the hotel and had excellent food.

  • David Dunlop says:

Golf course: We played the Montgomerie and the Twenty Ten. Both courses have a fabulous layout and were in great nick. The 3rd hole Par 5 on the Montgomerie is one of the most beautiful holes I have ever played. Superbly framed by tall trees either side off the tee, then as you get down the hill you get the views of the valley and of the 2010, simply breathtaking. The Twenty Ten is also brilliant, the holes with water are just visually amazing and also a great tough test of golf. The greens were extremely receptive yet still nice and quick to putt on.

Clubhouse: Very welcoming in the Lodge after the Montgomerie and the 2010 clubhouse is superb, loved the ryder cup changing rooms.

Hotel: We stayed in the Manor House and the rooms were top draw, great service and the buffet dinner in the olive restaurant was just amazing. so much choice and all delicious.

Location: easy to find, M4, turn off, you’re there.

Overall: 9.5/10, this place is right up there with The Grove, absolute top class.

YGT: they were brilliant, a bargain at £149 for 2 rounds and a nights b&b. will definitely be using them again.

Extremely happy with the trip and am now sitting at my desk wishing I was back there!

  • Chris Poole says:

Golf Course – What ever course you play here, you are in for a treat. condition is first class, working on them continually. Greens and fairways cut to perfection and patterned. I’m no good at golf but the course makes you feel like you are and hit shots that you could only dream off.
Clubhouse/19th hole – Very welcoming. from the point of view you can keep your clubs at the lodge all night and the staff will look after them and have them ready for you next day to the very helpful advice given to you by the starter. Just one little point. more signage as to start directions would help.
Hotel – Fantastic accommodation, very comfortable and relaxing after a hard round. Food a little expensive but you sure get what you pay for. Better signage again here required. Staff very helpful.
Location – Just off the M4 and up a hill, simple. And the views,, breathtaking.
Overall verdict – 9.5 out of 10, top resort. Resort has great ideas to make your experience superb. Buses to run you around… 6 restaurants, endless amount of staff

Just returned from Celtic Manor, Played the roman Road and Monti courses over two days, despite the heavy rainfall and December conditions the courses were both first rate, the greens in particullar were the best of any course I have played. If you even half fancy Celtic Manor just book up via Kevin at YGT, you’ll not be disapointed. This is without doubt the best golf break I have yet taken in every respect, first rate! Even though its a long way from home I will certainly return.

  • Martin old says:

Just returned from a two day break at Celtic Manor, with three members of our golf society.. The weather was very kind to us especially for February. We had a brilliant time, all of the staff, clubhouse and hotel, were exceptionally pleasant and helpful. Played the Roman Road and Montgomery courses. Both in really good condition and without doubt this was the best golf break any of us has experienced. It was incredibly good value and we will without doubt be returning soon.

  • Liz says:

Just returned after a lovely stay at the Celtic Manor. My partner thoroughly enjoyed playing on the Montgomerie and Roman Road courses and I very much enjoyed using the spa facilities. We ate in Le Patio Restaurant and thought it was excellent. Everything about the stay was good value for money and we shall definitely go back.

  • Brenda Gilbey says:

Wow! What a fantastic experience. We played The Montgomerie course on our arrival on Sunday. We were recommended to have a buggy and truly grateful for the good advice from Rhys at YGT. Great course but playing very long due to torrential rain in the morning. Greens were a bit slow but very true. Monday, consistent rain but not too heavy to spoil our round. Front 9 was very fair and loved the views across the Usk valley. Back 9 was a bit of a beast but such an amazing feeling playing knowing that the Ryder Cup had been played there. Again, playing long but the greens were much faster.

And ……………. the resort hotel, Manor House (where we stayed) was brilliant. The staff, accommodation and food was great. Everyone in every part of the complex couldn’t have been more helpful. Great value for money and would certainly like to go back.

  • I went to Celtic Manor for two days and we played the 20/10 course the hospitality we received at the manor house was excellent, the accommodation we stayed in was excellent all members of staff was excellent. The organisation to and from the manor house to the golf courses was also excellent. I would like to thank all involved at Celtic Manor for an excellent time and we will return next year. Thank you for making are stay pleasant.

  • Michael Triggs says:

We are members of a five star golf club but we never stopped smiling from arriving to leaving. We get the same feeling from our own two golf courses but not the quality of the food or courtesy of the staff which we received from Celtic Manor.
We will return next year for a longer trip. Thank you to Sam for his
professional help in organizing the trip for us.

  • Mark Nichols says:

We had a group of 16 at Celtic Manor for 3 days, staying at the Manor House Hotel.
On the first day we played the 2010 course in a 4 ball team open with 2 to count.
The event was really well organised. The course was quite wet under foot and unfortunately the greens had been hollow tined and sanded, which we all felt was a little disappointing as it was an open competition, however we all understand the work has to be done at some point.
The 2nd day we played the Roman Road with our own competition of pairs and induvidual, and the 3rd day the Montgomerry with to same format with a draw for partners. Many thanks to Celtic for giving us 8 buggies for the last day.
Everyone had a fantastic 3 days, the accomodation was great, also the food, although a little pricey.
Everyone is hoping I will book it again for next year!
I would like to thank Tommy at Your Golf Travel for his help.

  • Bigmsj says:

My adult son and I have just spent three days at the Celtic Manor, staying in the old Manor House. A personal GPS would be useful to find your way from here to the other areas for eating and car parking. We were advise that we would need to pay £5 per day for parking. We drove round all the out door parking areas close to the hotel and they were all closed off. We therefore had to park in the underground car park at £15 per night, very unfair.

We played the Montgomerie twice and the 2010 once. Both courses were in excellent condition with some very challenging greens. The scenery was stunning and we saw a golden eagle! The service from all golfing staff was excellent.

We ate in the Rafters, which was good and also the Grill. The Grill had very little to offer someone who has to eat gluten free, with not one dessert offered. We thought the Grill food overpriced, but Mike said that the Guinness was excellent.

The only thing that spoilt it for us were to rooms. Two rooms at the back facing the underground car park. There was a constant noise from here, (either extractor or generator) which if you chose to open your bedroom window made sleep difficult. So it was either sleep with the noise from the air con or open the window for a different noise. A no win situation.

But despite getting very little sleep, we enjoyed our stay and will be saving up to go again, but sleep elsewhere.
