Royal Birkdale has a pedigree to rival any course in the United Kingdom, having played host to two Ryder Cups, the Walker and Curtis Cups, the Women's British Open, and the world's greatest golfing competition, the Open Championship, on 9 occasions.
The most recent visit saw Irishman Padraig Harrington become the first European to win back-to-back Championships since James Braid way back in 1906, but the history of the club dates back to its inception in 1889. Since then it has emerged as the top attraction in England's most impressive golfing area, its pure links test enchanting all those fortunate enough to visit.
Though not particularly long, Birkdale is a fearsome test, particularly when the wind blows hard off the sea. Highlights for many are the outstanding short holes; both the 4th and 12th demand an extremely accurate iron shot to greens that look miniscule in the midst of the bunkers and dunes that surround. Birkdale is as good as links golf in England comes, and is the jewel in Southport's considerable golfing crown.
The world's best will assemble at Birkdale in July 2008 for the Open Championship - make sure you visit to experience one of golf's most historic courses.
