Martin Kaymer is already revered as one of the best golfers in the sport. Whether it was the determination shown in holing the winning putt at Medinah to clinch the 2012 Ryder Cup or his maiden Major win at Whilstling Straits, Kaymer has produced a host of sensational results which have set him out as one of the players to beat. His victory on Sunday at Pinehurst will go down as one of the greatest in modern times. Whether it was the imperious pair of 65’s to start the tournament or his eight shot winning margin, Kaymer looks set to be on the path to greatness. We’ve taken a look at some interesting facts about the 2-time Major winner…hopefully come September he’ll be able to add another Ryder Cup to his list of accolades…

Mr 59…although it should’ve been 58…
Kaymer’s lowest round in professional golf is 59 at the Habsburg Classic in 2006. This score was all the more remarkable given that it actually contained a bogey (Kaymer took a 4 on the par-3 2nd hole). This score set up a 10 shot victory and a remarkable -27 3-round total. He achieved this whilst playing on the EPD Tour which is the third-tier on the professional circuit just below the Challenge Tour.

Playoff Master
Kaymer has an enviable playoff record winning 3 out of 4 contested. One of these victories was arguably one of the most important of his career when Kaymer managed to defeat Bubba Watson in a 3 hole playoff to claim the 2010 USPGA Championship at Whilsting Straits.

Where there’s blame, there’s a claim…
A go karting accident in 2009 potentially cost Kaymer over £1,000,000 in prize money. The crash which caused some broken toes for the German and caused him to miss two crucial months of the Race to Dubai season.

Now that’s just showing off..
A hole-in-one is a rare achievement, getting one at Augusta National is even rarer but getting one during practice for The Masters whilst skimming it over the lake in front of the par-3 16th hole puts Kaymer in very elite company…

Congratulations on your win, here is your cheque for 0 euros…
Whilst playing as an amateur, Kaymer won his first professional event with a 5-shot victory in the Central German Classic in 2005. This was the start of a prolific run of form which saw him stride effortlessly into the paid ranks with a further 6 wins on the EPD Tour in 2006 as well as 2 on the Challenge Tour. His first European Tour victory came in January 2008 winning the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship by 4 shots from a chasing pack including Henrik Stenson and Lee Westwood.
