Many people go to Castle Combe for the motor sport. It’s one of the best established circuits in the UK where, in 1950, a youthful Stirling Moss won the 2.5 litre race. However the village of Castle Combe is an attraction in its own right – it was recently voted the most picturesque village in by English Heritage Magazine.

The Manor House Hotel & Golf Club, which is located in the village itself, is one of our favourite golf resorts in the South of England and we’re happy to announce that it has been recently awarded the AA 5 Star accreditation – and deservedly so.

The interior of the Manor is an ideal place to relax, with unique touches to make a golf break extra special.

The hotel, located near Bath, has been upgraded to a five black star property by the official AA Hotel Services rating and, in the report that followed, was described as a “real gem of a hotel”.

Stephen Browning, the General Manager of The Manor House, said, “We are very proud and honoured to be awarded a five star rating as it recognises the hard work and unrelenting dedication of each and every one of the team here. We are a family at The Manor House Hotel and we all take great pride and enjoyment in providing the best possible for our guests.”

So let’s take a look at just what makes The Manor House Hotel & Golf Club the ideal destination for a golf break.

First off, the 14th century Manor House offers magnificent accommodation in the lushest surroundings, situated in around 365 acres of picturesque wooded estate on the Southern fringes of the Cotswalds.

The traditional and the contemporary are wonderfully married in each of the 48 uniquely designed guestrooms. The Manor House offers you the option of staying in either the Main House or the Grade II listed Mews Cottages. Exposed Oak beams, chic furnishings, heavenly views, grand four poster beds, roll top, infinity or Jacuzzi baths and state of the art facilities are all on offer in the sumptuous guestrooms and suites – each individually designed to highest of standards.

Each guestroom portrays its own individual character and charm.

The Manor House’s attractions don’t just stop at the superb accommodation; it’s also able to boast the Michelin Starred Bybrook Restaurant. Headed up by Executive Chef Richard Davies, The Bybrook prides itself on serving only seasonal dishes which are made from locally sourced ingredients. These dishes are are perfectly enhanced by the extensive selection of world wines which are expertly matched by the sommelier to achieve a truly memorable dining experience.

Now on to the golf course, which is, tucked away in an “area of outstanding natural beauty”. The Peter Allis and Clive Clark design works perfectly with the outstanding hotel to make certain that the Manor House is one of the most luxurious and beautiful anywhere.

The golf course recently underwent a redesign to improve the layout and conditioning – this has helped to make it even more enjoyable than before.

The course is a relative newcomer, opening for play in 1992, though you wouldn’t think it as the very mature setting makes it seem much more grown up – old oak and beech trees line the impeccable fairways.

The River Bybrook defines the layout, bringing its share of splendour and drama, particularly at “Burton Brook” the 17th which is one of the greatest and most thrilling par-3s you’ll come across anywhere.

Today the course, which measures 6,500 yards, is undoubtedly one of the top courses in the South of England. It has been rewarded for its splendour by being awarded HSBC’s coveted Gold Star and Today’s Golfer included the Manor House in its breakdown of the UK’s leading 15.

Exactly like the village of Castle Combe, the finishing hole is one of the most charming closing holes in England. The green, on this par-4, is heavily protected by many sand traps and a series of interconnecting ponds. If you manage a par on this hole it will be a fitting end to what surely has to be one of the most interesting and exciting rounds of golf that you will be likely to experience anywhere across the UK.
